On February 2, 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida — the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl title in 50 years. Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP. Head coach Andy Reid won his first NFL championship.

The game

Super Bowl LIV opened with the 49ers controlling the first half. San Francisco led 20–10 heading into the fourth quarter, putting Kansas City in an uncommon deficit. Over the final seven minutes of play, the Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points to complete the comeback.

Mahomes finished 26 of 42 for 286 passing yards, with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. He also carried the ball for 29 yards and a rushing touchdown. His fourth-quarter poise, particularly a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce and two scoring drives that ended with Damien Williams touchdowns — one receiving, one rushing — sealed the victory. A late interception by Kendall Fuller ended the 49ers’ final threat.

The final score: Kansas City Chiefs 31, San Francisco 49ers 20.

The parade

Kansas City celebrated on February 5, 2020 — three days after the win — with a victory parade and rally through downtown. The route ran through the Power & Light District and concluded at Union Station, where Chiefs radio broadcaster Mitch Holthus served as master of ceremonies. Attendance was estimated at more than one million people, making it one of the largest gatherings in Kansas City history. The Kansas City Police Department reported only two arrests during the festivities.

The 2020 parade stands in contrast to the 2024 Chiefs Parade Shooting, which occurred at the same Union Station rally site following the Super Bowl LVIII championship.

Legacy

Super Bowl LIV ended a 50-year championship drought for the Chiefs — their previous NFL title had come in Super Bowl IV in January 1970. The win marked Andy Reid’s first Super Bowl championship after 21 seasons as an NFL head coach, and it established Patrick Mahomes — then 24 years old — as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks.

The victory initiated a Chiefs dynastic run. Kansas City returned to the Super Bowl the following two seasons (losses to Tampa Bay and Cincinnati) before winning back-to-back titles in Super Bowl LVII (2023) and Super Bowl LVIII (2024).
