Boulevardia was an annual two-day beer, music, and makers festival held each June in Kansas City, Missouri, from 2014 through 2025. Produced by a nonprofit organization and anchored by lead sponsor Boulevard Brewing Company, the festival rotated through three Kansas City venues over its eleven-year run before organizers announced its closure in January 2026.

History

The concept originated in 2013 as an advertising campaign idea presented to Boulevard Brewing Company. Boulevard trademarked the name and licensed it to a newly formed nonprofit, which launched the inaugural festival in 2014 in the West Bottoms — a historic industrial district in the shadow of the 12th Street Bridge. Organizers cited the area’s urban grit as central to the event’s early identity.

The festival remained in the West Bottoms through 2016, growing in scope each year. The 2015 edition introduced a Makers Market spotlighting local artisans. The 2016 lineup reflected the festival’s multicultural programming sensibility, featuring acts such as Making Movies and Mariachi El Bronx alongside national acts.

In 2017 the festival relocated to the Stockyards District to accommodate larger crowds. The expansion years (2017–2019) brought headliners including Manchester Orchestra and Tech N9ne, along with a notable operational innovation: all festival bars were staffed by local nonprofit volunteers, with proceeds directed to organizations including Harvesters and Wayside Waifs. By 2019 the programming had widened to include roller skating, expanded craft beer activations, and a custom beer collaboration — “Bou Lou,” a pineapple-coconut wheat ale co-created with Tech N9ne.

In 2022 Boulevardia moved again, settling at Crown Center for its final four years. The 2023 edition achieved zero-waste event certification and debuted an Eco-Expo. The 2024 festival, marking the tenth anniversary, featured headliners Milky Chance, Thundercat, and Big Freedia, and introduced a “Canna Village” offering THC seltzers. The 2025 edition, the last, shifted to a single-day format, with Tech N9ne, Hembree, and the Greeting Committee among the performers.

Over its run the festival earned “Best Music Festival” and “Best Local Event” recognition from The Pitch KC. Other headliners across the decade included DJ Jazzy Jeff, Dashboard Confessional, Hanson, and Thundercat.

In January 2026 organizers announced the festival would not return. No detailed explanation was offered; the closing statement read: “Ending on ten years feels right — like the final page of a story we’re incredibly proud to have written together.” Boulevard Brewing indicated it would continue celebrating its community presence through other experiences.

The festival

Boulevardia operated as a two-day event (Friday and Saturday) each June, typically drawing tens of thousands of attendees across both days. Programming centered on three pillars: live music across multiple stages featuring local, regional, and national acts; a craft beer experience anchored by Boulevard Brewing with additional pours from other KC-area and national craft breweries (see kc-brewing-tradition); and a Makers Market showcasing Kansas City artisans and food vendors.

The nonprofit production model directed bar revenue to local charitable organizations rather than commercial operators, a structure that became one of the festival’s distinguishing features. The model also drew in a wide volunteer base from KC’s nonprofit community each year.

COVID years

Boulevardia was among the first major Kansas City entertainment events canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 festival, originally scheduled for June 19–20 at Crown Center, was called off in April 2020. Organizers canceled the 2021 edition as well, citing the need to wait for a full-capacity return rather than produce a diminished event. Boulevardia resumed in June 2022 at Crown Center with its first full festival since 2019.
