A bronze sea horse figure atop a Plaza fountain basin — one of the early J.C. Nichols Italian imports installed in the Plaza’s first decade (late 1920s). The sea horse motif fits the Plaza’s broader marine + mythological aesthetic alongside the Mermaid Fountain, Neptune Fountain, and Bacchus Fountain.

History

The Sea Horse Fountain was installed at the Country Club Plaza approximately 1929 — within the Plaza’s first decade. Like several other Plaza pieces of the era, the bronze figure was imported from Italy.1

Architecture + materials

Cast bronze sea horse figure. Compact installation with water cascading from the base.

Current status

Operating, with seasonal off-period in winter.

Cultural significance

The Sea Horse Fountain joins the Plaza’s marine + mythological theme set — alongside the Mermaid Fountain, Neptune Fountain, and other sea-and-mythology pieces that establish the European-piazza aesthetic Nichols sought.
