Independence, Missouri is the Jackson County seat + a distinct municipality east of Kansas City, MO. Founded in 1827 — six years before Westport — Independence served as the original starting point of the Santa Fe + Oregon + Mormon Trails. The city is now best known as the lifelong home of Harry S. Truman (33rd US President), with the Truman Library + Home preserving his legacy.

Boundaries

Independence occupies a substantial area east of Kansas City, MO:

  • North: Missouri River
  • East: Lee’s Summit / Blue Springs municipal lines
  • South: ~39th Street (Independence southern limits)
  • West: Sugar Creek + Truman Road (Kansas City municipal line)

History

Founding (1827)

Independence was founded in 1827 as the Jackson County seat — predating both Kansas City (1850) + Westport (1833). The location was chosen for its strategic position on the west side of the Missouri River + near the frontier of US settlement.1

Western expansion outfitting (1830s-1850s)

Before Westport surpassed it in the 1840s, Independence was the dominant outfitting town for westward expansion. The Santa Fe Trail, the Oregon Trail, and the California Trail all originated in or near Independence. The town hosted wagon train assembly + frontier-supply operations through this era.

Mormon connection

In 1831, Joseph Smith + early Latter-day Saints settlers declared Independence the future site of Zion — the planned eternal home of the Mormon faith. Multiple early Mormon settlements were established in and around Independence. Conflict with non-Mormon settlers led to the Mormon War of 1838 + the eventual eviction of Mormons from Missouri.

Today, multiple Latter-day Saints (LDS) factions retain connections to Independence — including the Community of Christ (formerly Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints / RLDS), which is headquartered in Independence. The Independence Temple of the Community of Christ is one of the city’s most-significant religious buildings.

Civil War + post-war (1860s-1880s)

Like much of Western Missouri, Independence was deeply divided during the Civil War + suffered substantial wartime destruction. Order No. 11 + Confederate guerrilla activity affected the broader Jackson County area. Post-war recovery was slow.

Harry Truman era (1884-1972)

Harry S. Truman (harry-truman) was born in Lamar, Missouri in 1884 + grew up in Independence. He spent most of his adult life in Independence — meeting Bess Wallace (later Bess Truman) at age 6 + marrying her in 1919. Their home at 219 N Delaware Street was their primary residence throughout their lives.

Truman’s KC-Jackson-County political career began in Independence + his post-presidency was lived there. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum + the Truman Home preserve his legacy as the most-prominent Independence resident in history.

Modern era (1950s-present)

Modern Independence has evolved as a separate municipality from Kansas City while functioning culturally + economically as part of the broader metro. The city’s identity is anchored by:

  • The Truman legacy — National Historic Site + Library + Home
  • The Mormon Trail heritage — Community of Christ headquarters + temples
  • Older commercial corridors + suburban residential areas
  • Independence Square — historic town center, revitalized from 1998 onward by Ken and Cindy McClain into a dining and cultural destination
