Indian Creek is a Blue River tributary that runs through Overland Park and Leawood in Johnson County, Kansas, and into southern Kansas City, Missouri — a flash-flood stream whose greenway trails are a recreational spine of south JoCo and a recurring emergency corridor after heavy rain.12 The creek was named for Indigenous peoples who passed through the area; in the modern metro it is known less as a wilderness waterway than as a channelized urban stream with gauges, flood-inundation maps, and frequent trail closures.1

Geography

Indian Creek is one of three principal Blue River tributaries named in Nature Conservancy watershed materials, alongside Brush Creek and Tomahawk Creek.3 It drains a densely developed suburban watershed: USGS flood-inundation work for Overland Park and Leawood treats Indian Creek and Tomahawk Creek as a paired study area for a metro population then over 200,000.2

Flood history

USGS notes moderate flooding on Indian Creek in Overland Park in years including 1984, 1990, and 1998.2 Gauge records for Indian Creek at Overland Park (USGS 06893300) list a period-of-record peak of 17.78 ft / 12,800 cfs on June 9, 1984 in that study’s table.2 The October 4, 1998 flash flood raised the creek nearly 10 feet in hours, cresting about 16.17 ft near Overland Park in NWS event summaries.4 Local reporting has also cited an 18-foot high in August 2017 on municipal dashboards.5

Chronic flooding has driven multi-phase storm-sewer and floodplain projects in Overland Park (including work near Antioch and Switzer) aimed at removing properties from mapped floodplains.5 Interactions with Turkey Creek flood-control projects on the Kansas side have been studied as possible relief for Indian Creek peaks.1

Recreation

The Indian Creek Trail / greenway system is a major multi-use path network linking residential south JoCo to the Blue River corridor — popular in dry weather and frequently closed or submerged after storms.5
