History
Settlement and plat
Early settlers reached western Missouri by riverboat from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, with additional families from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia.1 County surveyor Robert Cass platted the town on July 29, 1868, filed as “The Town of Peculiar.”1
How the name stuck
At least two origin stories circulate:
- Postmaster version. First postmaster Edgar Thomson sought a post-office name; preferred choices (including “Excelsior”) were rejected as already taken. He is said to have written the postmaster general that the community did not care what name it received “so long as it is sort of ‘peculiar.’” The name Peculiar was approved and the post office opened June 22, 1868.1
- Folklore version. Missouri folklorist Margot Ford McMillen recounts settlers clearing a rise and one declaring the view matched a vision from Connecticut — “Well that’s peculiar!” — after which the village took the name.1
The town incorporated as a village in the 1890s and became a Missouri fourth-class city in 1953.1 A nine-day centenary celebration ran in July 1968 (antique show, Lions Club rodeo, Western horse show).1
Recent civic conflict
In 2024, the city blocked the proposed Harper Road Technology Park, a roughly $1.5 billion, 504-acre data-center project by Diode Ventures, after resident pushback.1 Local reporting later framed the fight as a turning point for civic engagement.1
