Shawnee, Kansas is one of the larger suburbs of the Kansas City metro — about 67,311 residents (2020 census; ~70,000 since) — in northern Johnson County. Founded as the settlement of “Gum Springs” (the first community in Johnson County and its first county seat) and incorporated in 1856, it was named for the Shawnee people relocated to eastern Kansas in the 1820s–30s. The town was burned in an 1862 raid by William Quantrill’s Confederate guerrillas during the border war, then grew after World War II into a primarily residential suburb anchored by the Nieman Road/Johnson Drive downtown, the Shawnee Town 1929 living-history museum, and the county’s largest park.
Overview
Shawnee is a city in northern Johnson County, Kansas, and one of the most populous municipalities in the Kansas City metropolitan area, with a 2020 census population of 67,311 (estimates near 70,000 in the mid-2020s).12 It covers about 42.9 square miles and is bordered by Lenexa, Merriam, and Overland Park, reaching west to the Kansas River.13 It is predominantly a residential suburb that grew westward through annexation over the late 20th century.3
The city is named for the Shawnee people, an Eastern Woodlands nation relocated to a reservation in eastern Kansas in the early 19th century; a Shawnee Methodist mission operated in the area.31
Disambiguation: “Shawnee” the city vs. “Shawnee Mission.” “Shawnee Mission” is not the city of Shawnee — it is a U.S. Postal Service regional name (established 1960, headquartered in neighboring Mission) and the name of the Shawnee Mission School District (USD 512), both covering roughly a dozen northeast Johnson County suburbs. The city of Shawnee is a distinct municipality; the shared name traces to the historic Shawnee Methodist Mission (whose surviving landmark buildings are in present-day Fairway).45
History
Shawnee began as a campsite and settlement called “Gum Springs,” the first community founded in Johnson County, which served briefly as the first county seat before Olathe took the role in 1857.6 The settlement incorporated in 1856 and the town was formally laid out in 1857.31
During the Kansas–Missouri border war, Shawneetown was attacked and burned to the ground on October 17, 1862 by William Quantrill’s Confederate guerrillas, who passed through the area again in 1863 ahead of the Lawrence Massacre.17 After the war, and especially after World War II, Shawnee developed into a fast-growing residential suburb.
