Tech N9ne — born Aaron Dontez Yates on November 8, 1971 in Kansas City, Missouri — is an American rapper, songwriter, and singer best known for his rapid-fire “chopper” delivery and for co-founding the independent record label Strange Music with business partner Travis O’Guin in 1999.1 Operating outside the major-label system for his entire commercial career, he has sold over two million albums and is widely regarded as one of the most successful independent artists in hip-hop.1 A lifelong Kansas Citian, he has become a de-facto ambassador for the city through hometown anthems for its sports teams.2

Biography

Early life & KC roots

Aaron Dontez Yates was born on November 8, 1971 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was raised in the city.1 His father was estranged, and his mother suffered from epilepsy and lupus — circumstances that profoundly shaped his later artistry.1 He attended Southwest High School in Kansas City.1 As a child he reportedly used rap as a memory device, “rapping the letters of his name in order to remember how to spell it.”1

His stage name originated with rapper Black Walt, who referenced the TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun as a nod to Yates’s rapid delivery.1 Yates later reinterpreted the name to mean the “complete technique of rhyme” — “tech” for technique and “nine” representing the number of completion.1

Career

Before his independent breakthrough, Yates cycled through several groups and major-label deals, including Black Mafia (1991), Nnutthowze (Perspective Records, 1993), and The Regime (formed by Yukmouth, 1997).1 He signed briefly with Qwest Records and JCOR Records, experiences that left him frustrated with the major-label structure.1

He is known for a dynamic “chopper”-style rapid-fire delivery, building flow patterns so that his vocals function “like a percussion” instrument.1 He has cited old-school influences including N.W.A, Public Enemy, and Eric B. & Rakim.1

His major albums include Anghellic (2001), Absolute Power (2002, which debuted at #79 on the Billboard 200), Everready (The Religion) (2006), K.O.D. (2009), All 6’s and 7’s (2011), Something Else (2013), and Special Effects (2015).1

Strange Music

In 1999, Yates and business partner Travis O’Guin founded the record label Strange Music, a decision that gave Yates creative control and underpinned his long-term success as an independent artist.1 The label is based in Lee’s Summit, a Kansas City metro suburb, where it generates local jobs and tax revenue.2

By September 2008, Yates had “exceeded one million album sales over his entire catalog,” and he has since “sold over two million albums,” with his music featured in film, television, and interactive media.1 Strange Music is frequently cited as one of the most successful independent labels in hip-hop.1

Legacy / KC ambassadorship

Yates remains deeply invested in his hometown and has become a de-facto Kansas City ambassador through music celebrating its sports franchises — the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, and Sporting Kansas City.12 His 2015 “KCMO Anthem” celebrated the city’s teams.3

His song “Red Kingdom”, an anthem dedicated to the Chiefs, was released to YouTube on January 18, 2019 (ahead of the AFC Championship Game) and to streaming platforms on September 11, 2019, through Strange Music.4 It became an unofficial team anthem during the Chiefs’ 2019–20 Super Bowl-winning season and has been played at Arrowhead Stadium.4 In 2025 he was announced as a remixer creating Kansas City’s “Sonic ID” for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.15
