Description

Barrio Mexican Kitchen & Bar is a casual, taqueria-inspired Kansas City restaurant-and-bar group serving an array of specialty and Mexican “street” tacos alongside other Mexican-inspired plates, salads, kebabs, and a margarita/cocktail program.56 Founder Chris Ridler has described the concept as “Cali-Mex or fresh Mex, with a focus on fresh ingredients,” positioning it as a more health-conscious, produce-forward take on Mexican fare.6

The original location opened in Brookside on February 27, 2018, in a converted former gas-station space at 6227 Brookside Plaza; Ridler’s wife served as the project’s interior designer and Luke Pickett came on as operating partner.67 The brand expanded to the Red Bridge Shopping Center in south Kansas City (announced October 2018, opened 2019) and later to The Village at Briarcliff in the Northland.892

All three locations remain open as of June 2026, each carrying the “Barrio” name with its neighborhood as the locally used prefix (Brookside Barrio, Red Bridge Barrio, Briarcliff Barrio).5432

Ownership and history

Barrio is owned by Kansas City restaurateur Chris Ridler, who runs it with Luke Pickett as operating partner.67 Ridler’s earlier KC concepts include Zócalo Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria on the Country Club Plaza (opened ~2011/2012; permanently closed January 29, 2023) and Sol Cantina at Martini Corner.610 Barrio was Ridler’s later, more casual fresh-Mex concept and became the family/group’s growth vehicle: from the single 2018 Brookside taqueria it expanded to Red Bridge (2019) and Briarcliff (~2022).6892

Founding order within the group: Zócalo (Plaza, ~2011/2012, now closed) → Sol Cantina (Martini Corner) → Barrio (Brookside, 2018) → Barrio Red Bridge (2019) → Barrio Briarcliff (~2022). Luke Pickett has also been cited as operating partner at a “Barrio Taqueria” at Martini Corner. for the precise Briarcliff opening date and the current Sol Cantina / Martini Corner status.

Disputes

Brand-structure note (resolved by editorial judgment): the intake brief treated “Brookside Barrio,” “Barrio Mexican Kitchen & Bar,” and “Zócalo” as three distinct active brands owned by “Ridler Pickett & Luke Pickett.” Research shows: (1) the owner is Chris Ridler (a person), with Luke Pickett as operating partner — there is no “Ridler Pickett” individual; (2) Barrio is one brand with three locations (Brookside/Red Bridge/Briarcliff), not separate brands — so this single multi-location page covers them; (3) Zócalo is a separate Ridler concept that closed Jan 29, 2023 and does not get an active record (see closed stub zocalo-mexican-cuisine-tequileria).
