CLOSED — not an active Registry record. Zócalo Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria was a Country Club Plaza Mexican restaurant and tequila bar opened ~2011/2012 by KC restaurateur Chris Ridler (the same owner behind the Barrio group). It permanently closed January 29, 2023 after ~11 years. Tier 2 (historical) assigned based on ~11-year Plaza tenure and Chris Ridler-group ownership per feedback_tier_flexibility (tier applies to operating businesses; historical closed records reflect past performance and significance). Retained as a closed stub for the historical record and to anchor the Ridler-group cross-links (Barrio, Sol Cantina).
Closure note
Status: PERMANENTLY CLOSED (Jan 29, 2023). Per the Registry’s editorial rules, closed businesses are not given active records and are not added to the Map dataset. This page exists only as a closed stub documenting Ridler-group lineage. Do not promote, do not add a Map pin.
Description
Zócalo Mexican Cuisine & Tequileria operated for roughly 11 years on the Country Club Plaza at 620 W 48th St (48th & Jefferson) before permanently closing January 29, 2023.12 Its menu featured salads, tacos, enchiladas, and entrées built from a mix of imported and local ingredients (heirloom beans, fresh corn tortillas) in a Cal-Mex style, paired with a tequila program of more than 60 100%-blue-agave expressions and handcrafted cocktails.1 Owner Chris Ridler attributed the closure to post-pandemic shifts in dining habits and an expiring lease he chose not to renew.1
Ownership and history
Zócalo was owned by KC restaurateur Chris Ridler, who later founded the Barrio Mexican Kitchen & Bar group (Brookside, 2018) with operating partner Luke Pickett, and who also operated Sol Cantina at Martini Corner.13 Within the Ridler group, Zócalo (Plaza, ~2011/2012) predates Barrio; it closed in 2023 while the Barrio locations continued operating.13 The Plaza lease landed in early 2011 per Kansas City Business Journal coverage.4

Disputes
Editorial: the intake brief listed Zócalo as an active Pickett-group brand to be written as an active page. It is closed (Jan 29, 2023), so per Registry rules it is recorded only as this closed stub, with no Map pin and no tier. Ownership is Chris Ridler (not a “Pickett”); the Pickett tie is via the shared Ridler group, not direct Zócalo ownership.
