Big T’s Bar-B-Q is a no-frills, wood-only barbecue counter with a drive-thru at 62nd & Blue Parkway on Kansas City’s east side. Owner and pitmaster Timothy “Big T” Jones cooks in a brick pit built into the wall behind the register — no gas, no electricity, no thermometer — the way his father Oscar did at his own 1970s restaurant on the same stretch of road. Kansas City Magazine ranked it the fourth-best barbecue in the city in 2023 for its thin-sliced brisket, chili-hot orange sauce and fries. Order at the counter; there is no phone or online ordering.
Description
Big T’s sits in a low, plain building at 6201 Blue Parkway, a block west of Big Dog’s BBQ and a few miles from the Swope Parkway neighborhood where the Jones family’s barbecue began.12 The pit is the room’s only ornament: a brick smoker set into the wall behind the counter, fed with wood and run without gas, electricity or a temperature gauge.1 Regulars describe walking inside rather than using the drive-thru specifically to stand in the smoke and watch the pit.2
Kansas City Magazine’s 2023 ranking placed Big T’s fourth in the city and described the food in terms of an older Kansas City style: brisket, ham and turkey sliced thin with bark “full of character,” and a “neon orange-red” sauce with real chili heat and little sweetness — a sauce Jones sometimes withholds altogether or swaps for a milder version. The magazine also singled out the fries as “some of the finest in Kansas City.”1 KSHB’s newsroom, drafting the metro’s barbecue joints ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, took Big T’s in the second round: “While not the prettiest looking BBQ in the world, it is absolutely delicious … an extremely underrated barbecue spot in the Kansas City area. Shout-out to the pitmaster there, who knows exactly what he’s doing.”3
Third-party listings name burnt-end open-face sandwiches, the double-decker beef sandwich, chopped beef on bun, rib tips, short ends, barbecue chicken, sweet-potato fries and corn on the cob as the common orders; a 2020 menu photographed at the since-closed Blue Ridge location listed ribs, rib tips, beef, ham, sausage, fries, onion rings and corn.24 Sweet potato pie appears in reviews.5 Service reviews are mixed — long waits and items running out are frequent complaints — while the meat, sauce and sides draw consistent praise.25
Ownership and history
Oscar Jones, Timothy’s father, smoked meat for the neighborhood in a backyard brick barbecue off Swope Parkway before opening his own restaurant, Oscar’s, in the 1970s; he placed second at the American Royal “when the American Royal was just a baby.”1 Oscar was also an original Chiefs season-ticket holder who kept his seats through the franchise’s lean years — “at some point we couldn’t even give those tickets away,” Tim Jones told KSHB in 2018, describing a family tradition, now more than twenty members strong, of following the Chiefs to one road game a year.6
Timothy “Big T” Jones learned the craft from his father and opened the first Big T’s in 1993 at Longview Road and Blue Ridge Boulevard (9409 Blue Ridge Blvd, 64138).64 Years later he opened a second Big T’s on Blue Parkway in the building where Oscar’s had operated.6 The Blue Ridge original — which a regional barbecue guide rated the better of the two and noted sat “a few blocks” from LC’s Bar-B-Q — has since closed; the same guide now marks its entry “Archive Only – Closed 2026,” and Yelp lists it as closed.47 The Blue Parkway location is the surviving Big T’s.
Kansas City Magazine framed the restaurant’s significance in 2023 as generational continuity: “As the oldest spots like Arthur Bryant’s pass into the hands of branding companies, Big T’s still carries a flame passed torch to torch through generations.”1
