Restaurante El Pulgarcito is a Salvadoran family restaurant at 42nd and Truman Road on Kansas City’s East Side — a colorful, music-filled room with bilingual servers, known above all for its pupusas: traditional chicharrón, queso, frijol-y-queso and revueltas at $3.35, and “special” pupusas of shrimp, carne asada, ayote, loroco and jalapeño at $3.45, each with curtido and salsa. Around them sit the full Salvadoran table — caldos (including a cow-hoof caldo de pata and a $27.99 mariscada), fried whole mojarra, carne guisada, pollo en crema, pastelitos, fried yuca with chicharrón, plátanos fritos, a Salvadoran breakfast plate — plus tamales, a Mexican section of enchiladas and fajitas, and weekend pan con pollo and caldo de gallina. It takes the name El Pulgarcito de América — “the Tom Thumb of the Americas,” El Salvador’s nickname — as does the older, unrelated-as-far-as-sourced El Pulgarcito in Merriam.

Description

El Pulgarcito’s own description, on a promotional site at elpulgarcito.shop, calls it “a hidden gem tucked away at 4200 E Truman Rd” whose “colorful decor and great music create an inviting space,” with “fast, friendly service from bilingual staff” and “generous portions and affordable prices.”1 Customer reviews quoted on the same site — and its “1,927 reviews, 4.8 rating” counter — are drawn from Google and Yelp; the site’s provenance (it is not clearly operated by the restaurant, and its contact address is a Gmail account named for the domain) means it is treated here as a secondary source for everything except the address and phone, which Yelp and Facebook corroborate.123

The menu, photographed by customers, is a spiral-bound Salvadoran document. Pupusas come in traditional fillings — chicharrón, chicharrón y queso, frijol y queso, revueltas — at $3.35 and “special” versions (camarón y queso, carne asada y queso, ayote y queso, queso y loroco, jalapeño y queso, pollo y queso, plain queso, revueltas con loroco) at $3.45, with rice-flour masa for a quarter more.4 The caldos — every soup served with tortillas — run from caldo de pollo ($15.99) and caldo de res with yuca, squash and cabbage ($16.99) through caldo de pata, a cow-hoof soup ($17.99), caldo de pescado ($17.99), caldo de camarones ($18.99) and a $27.99 mariscada of crab, “seven seas,” tilapia and shrimp finished with coconut or Salvadoran cream.4 Platillos — all with tortillas — include whole fried mojarra, camarones rancheros, filete empanizado, carne asada, bistec encebollado, carne guisada, pollo en crema, pollo encebollado, pollo frito, pollo guisado, pollo empanizado, costillas de puerco, hígado encebollado and pollo con tajadas ($15.99–17.99).4 The Breakfast & Appetizer page carries a Salvadoran breakfast of fried plantains, crema, cheese, beans and eggs ($16.99; with carne asada, chicken or chorizo $22.99), plantain-dough empanadas filled with beans or milk ($2.99), plátanos fritos, pastelitos de pollo, tajadas and yuca frita o sancochada with chicharrón; Fin de Semana weekend specials are pan relleno, pan con pollo and caldo de gallina; a Mexican page offers enchiladas, fajitas, tacos ($3.35), burritos, chimichangas, taco salad, quesadillas and chiles rellenos; and there are burgers, tamales (pork, chicken, elote, $3.25) and aguas naturales — horchata de arroz, horchata de morro, maracuyá, piña, tamarindo.4

Ownership and history

No owner, founding date or press profile was found. The restaurant’s Facebook page is titled “Restaurante Salvadoreño El Pulgarcito”; Yelp lists it as “Restaurante El Pulgarcito”; the menu photographs show at least three price generations (tacos at $2.99, then $3.35; platillos from $10.49–11.99 to $15.99–17.99), which suggests several years of operation.324

The name is shared with El Pulgarcito Salvadorean Restaurant at 5921 Merriam Drive, founded in 2003 by Carlos Ruano Cruz, which has its own Registry page; Kansas City Magazine’s 2025 “Latin bites for $15 or less” list features the Merriam restaurant, not this one.5 Neither restaurant’s public materials mention the other, and no shared ownership is documented. The Merriam restaurant’s former kitchen manager Rosa Cardoza went on to found El Rinconcito Salvadoreño; the Truman Road restaurant’s lineage is unknown.
