a chef/pitmaster-owned, “modern take on classic Kansas City barbecue” restaurant in Shawnee, KS, opened in 2015 by Kansas City-area native Joe Tulipana. Named for the sealed “blind box” competitive BBQ teams turn in to judges; built around a custom wood-burning smoker and KC-style burnt ends. Now a two-location independent operation (Shawnee flagship + Village West).

Description

Blind Box BBQ is an independent, owner-operated barbecue restaurant in Shawnee, Kansas, serving what it bills as “a modern take on the classic Kansas City barbecue.”1 The kitchen runs a custom wood-burning smoker and produces the canonical KC slate — brisket, burnt ends, pulled pork, ribs, sausage, smoked chicken, turkey and ham — alongside made-from-scratch sides, salads, steaks, burgers, and desserts.23 Signature items include the “Lil’ Juicy” smoked beef sandwich (Swiss, horseradish aioli), bourbon baked beans, and BBQ street corn, plus less-traditional offerings like BBQ nachos and BBQ wontons.34

The restaurant is positioned as an upscale, sit-down BBQ destination with a full bar emphasizing high-end bourbons and whiskeys and craft cocktails — an unusual pairing of competition-grade barbecue with a bar program.3 The name “Blind Box” is a competition-BBQ term: it refers to the sealed, anonymized boxes that competitive teams submit to judges, tying the restaurant’s identity to the KC-rooted competitive barbecue circuit.23

Ownership and history

Blind Box BBQ was founded by Joe Tulipana, a Kansas City-area native who came to barbecue ownership by an unconventional route. After earning a civil engineering degree and working for a software company, Tulipana — by his own account not “built for a life behind a desk” — left his desk job at age 24-25 to start the restaurant.34 Over the summer of 2015 he and his then-19-year-old brother John Tulipana remodeled the former Happy Banzai Japanese Steakhouse space, and Blind Box BBQ opened in September 2015.3

The restaurant sits next door to PowerPlay Family Entertainment Center, which the Tulipana family also owns — establishing deep local family roots in the Shawnee/Johnson County market.4 Notably, Tulipana “reverse-engineered” his way into competitive barbecue: rather than building a reputation on the competition circuit and then opening a restaurant (the conventional KC path), he opened the restaurant first and entered competition afterward — yet still named the business after a core competition artifact.14

Blind Box has since grown to a second location at Village West (the Legends area of Kansas City, KS), operating inside / adjacent to Nebraska Furniture Mart at 1601 Village West Pkwy.5 Both locations share the (913) 268-4227 phone line. The business remains independent and locally owned with no corporate parent.
