Buenos Aires Restaurante is an Argentine-European restaurant, café and bakery in downtown Shawnee, Kansas, owned by chef Claudia Luna West, who was born and raised in Tucumán, Argentina. Opened in late 2024 with a grand opening in January 2025, it brings rarely-available Argentine cuisine — empanadas, asado-style grilled meats, milanesa (Argentine-style chicken fried steak) — to Johnson County, alongside Italian, Spanish, and French dishes drawn from family recipes refined over more than two decades in the catering business.
Description
Buenos Aires Restaurante occupies a downtown Shawnee storefront on Johnson Drive, just off Nieman Road, in the city’s growing dining and entertainment district. Owner and chef Claudia Luna West conceived it as a “destination restaurant” intended to fill a gap she identified in the metro: “There’s a lot of people that like Argentinian cuisine, but they don’t have access to it.”1
The menu blends Argentine staples — empanadas, asado-style grilled meats, and milanesa (described in local coverage as Argentinian-style chicken fried steak) — with Italian, Spanish, French, and American dishes, reflecting both Argentina’s strong European culinary heritage and Luna West’s own extensive travels. The kitchen emphasizes cooking “from scratch, pure and authentic,” with the owner citing renowned Argentine chef Francis Mallmann’s fire-and-smoke philosophy as an influence.2 An attached café and bakery offers crepes, cakes, chocolate truffles, and grab-and-go items. The restaurant also runs an afternoon tea service (4–5 p.m.) and a weekend brunch buffet, and has hosted events such as trivia nights, wine tastings, and karaoke.13
Ownership and history
Buenos Aires Restaurante is owned by Claudia Luna West, who was born and raised in Tucumán, Argentina, and grew up in the restaurant industry helping her father run eateries.12 She has lived in and traveled through many countries — particularly across Europe, where her ancestors originated — refining family recipes passed down to her.2 Luna West has operated Claudia Luna Catering for more than 20 years and, with her husband, also owns Mom’s Empanadas, making Buenos Aires Restaurante part of a small family hospitality operation rather than a chain.1
The restaurant held an initial grand-opening event in August 2024 and a formal grand opening on January 11, 2025, after which it settled into regular hours (Monday–Saturday lunch and dinner, Sunday limited hours).13 It is part of the wave of independent restaurants — including the unrelated Gilda’s Bar de Tapas nearby — revitalizing downtown Shawnee’s dining scene.
