Caribe Blue Restaurant was a Latin-Caribbean restaurant at 402 N 5th St on Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas, beside the Strawberry Hill Museum. It opened during the COVID-19 pandemic and served food from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Venezuela — pollo guisado, mofongo, seafood rice, sweet plantains, tropical fruit shakes. It is closed. The closure is confirmed by Kansas City Magazine on 4 November 2024, which described Caribe Blue as a “now-closed” KCK restaurant whose shuttering left a Caribbean-food gap that a KCMO operator then set out to fill.12 Owner and exact closure date: ****.

Description

Caribe Blue occupied a storefront at 402 N 5th St on Strawberry Hill, the bluff-top neighbourhood immediately north of downtown Kansas City, Kansas, a few doors from the Strawberry Hill Museum & Cultural Center. It was, in the period it operated, one of very few Latin-Caribbean kitchens in the metro — a distinct culinary lane from the Mexican corridor along Central Avenue a few blocks south, and from the Jamaican and Afro-Caribbean cooking that the Registry records elsewhere in the metro at island-spice-caribbean and wah-gwan-afro-caribbean.

The 2021 Urban Hikes KC Strawberry Hill food and drink guide described it as follows: “If you’ve never had Latin Caribbean, this is where it’s at. Opening during the pandemic, Caribe Blue took off from the beginning.” The guide names the countries represented — Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic — and singles out pollo guisado (stewed chicken), a seafood rice comparable to paella, sweet fried plantains, avocado salad, and made-to-order tropical fruit shakes.2 Directory listings that survive the closure also attach mofongo, ropa vieja, and a Cuban sandwich to the name, but those are aggregator pages and are not treated as menu evidence here.

Ownership and history

Not established. No owner name, family background, founding year or press profile for Caribe Blue was located in any source that could be opened. The restaurant appears not to have received a full opening profile in KCUR, The Pitch, Kansas City Magazine or Startland — its only located appearance in edited local press is the retrospective mention of its closure.1

**** A Kansas Secretary of State entity search and a Wyandotte County food-establishment licence check would settle the operating company and the licence lapse date; neither has been run.

Independence: no chain, franchise or out-of-metro parent identified. Nothing in the record suggests anything other than a single owner-operated storefront.

Last verified: 2026-08-14 · Source: Caribe Blue’s own online-ordering menu, served on the restaurant’s own domain at www.caribebluekc.com/order — a Menufy storefront operated by the restaurant, recovered from the Internet Archive capture of 18 October 2021.3 · Confidence: High for the historical record, not current. Every item name, price and description below is first-party operator copy from the restaurant’s own ordering page, which self-identifies as “Caribe Blue Restaurant Online Ordering Menu, 402 N 5th St, Kansas City, KS 66101, (913) 232-9971”. The restaurant is closed — these are the prices Caribe Blue charged as of the 2021-10-18 capture, not live prices. No third-party aggregator (Zmenu, MenuPix, Restaurantji, Grubhub, DoorDash, Restaurant Guru, Snack-Online) was used for any price.

[!warning] CORRECTION to the 2026-08-13 pass — and the ceiling. The previous pass recorded a “confirmed absence of a recoverable first-party menu” and 0 priced items. That finding was wrong, and the reason is instructive: it tested only caribbeanbluekc.com (double-b, a genuine domain-collision trap) and never tested caribebluekc.com (single-b), which was the restaurant’s actual domain. The single-b domain has Internet Archive captures, including a live capture of its /order page carrying the complete priced menu reproduced below. The double-b trap warning still stands and is retained.

CEILING REACHED — do not re-spend. caribebluekc.com is now a parked domain (it redirects to domaincntrol.com; the 2023-06-07 capture is a parking stub).4 The business is closed. This 2021 capture is the final first-party menu of record; menu_status is partial rather than verified because the capture is complete but its currency is not, and never can be.

Prices marked + are the operator’s own “starting at” markers, indicating size or option variants priced above the base.3

What this menu establishes

The recovered menu materially sharpens the Description above. Caribe Blue was not only a dinner restaurant — it ran a full Caribbean breakfast and coffee counter (Tres Golpes, 4 Golpes with Dominican longaniza, a Cuban espresso program down to the cortadito and colada) alongside a Puerto Rican sandwich board (Tripleta, Jibarito, Cubano, Medianoche) and a fresh-baked Puerto Rican pastry case (quesitos, guava, guava con queso). The pan-Caribbean span the Urban Hikes KC guide described is confirmed in the operator’s own words: Dominican (morir soñando, longaniza, tres golpes), Puerto Rican (mofongo, trifongo, bifongo, alcapurrias, tostones, arañitas, panapén), Cuban (Cubano, medianoche, congrí, café cubano) and Colombian (a house Bandeja Paisa).3

Mofongo is confirmed first-party — it appears as a $6.00 side, and as the Mofongo Burger bun — so the Description’s earlier caution that mofongo came only from aggregator listings can be retired. Pollo guisado as such does not appear on the recovered ordering menu; the closest first-party items are Creole Salsa Pollo and Creole Sauce Camarones. The Urban Hikes KC attribution of pollo guisado is edited third-party editorial and is left as-is, not upgraded.23

Disputes

  • Phone number. Resolved 2026-08-14. (913) 232-9971 is the restaurant’s own number — it is printed on Caribe Blue’s own ordering page, not merely circulated on directories.3 Restaurant Guru’s +1 (787) 562-0160 is a Puerto Rico area code, plausible as an owner’s carried-over mobile but unverified and not first-party.5 Both recorded; neither dialled. The 787 number remains ****, and is a live lead on the owners’ origin (see Open Questions).
  • Cuisine label. Yelp categorises the business as Dominican; the Urban Hikes KC guide describes a pan-Caribbean menu spanning Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.62 The broader description is preferred here as the better-sourced one.
  • Closure date. Only an upper bound is established (on or before 2024-11-04). Directory listings continued to publish plausible-looking operating hours long after that date, which is a caution about listing data, not a competing claim.

Kansas City Magazine, “Bori-bliss right here in KC,” published 4 November 2024 (accessed 2026-08-13) — asserts: Jorge Rivera opened Primos at 1600 Campbell St, KCMO, on Cinco de Mayo 2024, and that Caribe Blue was a now-closed KCK restaurant whose closing left a Caribbean-cuisine void that motivated Primos. This is the closure verification for this page. Does not give Caribe Blue’s owner, founding year, or exact closure date. ↩ ↩2

Urban Hikes KC, “Rebekah’s Strawberry Hill and Downtown Kansas City, KS Food and Drink Guide,” published 28 June 2021 (accessed 2026-08-13) — asserts: Caribe Blue at 402 N 5th St, Kansas City, KS 66101; opened during the pandemic and “took off from the beginning”; cuisine from Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic; dishes including pollo guisado, a paella-like seafood rice, sweet fried plantains, avocado salad, and made-to-order tropical fruit shakes. First-party operator copy. Asserts: page self-identifies as “Caribe Blue Restaurant Online Ordering Menu”, 402 N 5th St, Kansas City, KS 66101, (913) 232-9971, service window 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; the complete priced item list reproduced on this page across Breakfast, Egg Sandwiches, Omelettes, Appetizers, Classic Sandwiches, Platos from the House (chicken / pork / beef / seafood), Kids’ Menu, Sides, Dessert, Fresh-Baked Dulces, Beverages, Juices/Batidas and Coffee de la Casa; the operator’s “all plates include two sides” rule on the Platos sections; the footer links “Visit our Facebook” → facebook.com and “Visit our Yelp” → yelp.com; footer “Powered by Menufy © 2021”. 4. Internet Archive capture of caribebluekc.com, snapshot 7 June 2023 (retrieved 2026-08-14) — asserts: by June 2023 the restaurant’s own domain no longer served a site; it returned a domain-parking stub that meta-refreshes and scripts a redirect to domaincntrol.com. This is why the domain was invisible to a live check, and it fixes the upper bound on the site’s life rather than the business’s. The Wayback CDX index for the domain surfaces only four records — the root (301), favicon.ico, robots.txt, and the /order page used above. ↩
