Hey Sugar on Strawberry Hill is a locally owned candy and ice cream shop at 426 N. Sixth Street, on the corner of Sixth and Sandusky in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas.12 Owners Curtis Jay and Lorena Perez opened it in late June 2023 to give the neighborhood a family-friendly daytime spot, serving small-batch ice cream, shaved ice, Italian sodas, and candy from around the world.1

Description

Hey Sugar sits on the corner of Sixth Street and Sandusky Avenue on Strawberry Hill, a candy-and-ice-cream shop with about six tables, toys, children’s books, and a camel mural by artist Tianna Hughes.1 It scoops 21 flavors of small-batch ice cream from Bliss Artisan (an Indiana maker), and also serves shaved ice and Italian sodas alongside an extensive candy wall — old-fashioned brands (Necco Wafers, Zotz), Asian candies (Hi-Chew, Hello Panda), Mexican options (Malvabon, Puerquitos), and sour candies.1

Ownership and history

Curtis Jay partnered with a friend, Lorena Perez, to open Hey Sugar in late June 2023, timed to the neighborhood’s Third Friday Art Walk.1 Jay said the area had plenty of nightlife but little for families and kids during the day, and that the nearest other place to get ice cream was the River Market across the state line — a gap the shop was built to fill.1

The shop’s own menu page publishes a named ice-cream flavor list and describes the rest of the offering in categories, with no prices on any item.3 The page states the flavors are scooped on a rotating basis and that the list is “some of the flavors,” so it is a sample of the rotation, not a fixed menu.3 Flavors are described as including locally made ice cream as well as Dippin’ Dots — note this differs from the opening coverage, which attributed the ice cream to Indiana maker Bliss Artisan; the supplier mix appears to have broadened since 2023.31

Per-item descriptions: ceiling reached, 2026-08-13. Hey Sugar publishes no per-item description copy anywhere first-party, and the list below is name-only by the shop’s own design — a rotating ice-cream flavor picker, which is legitimately name-only. Checked and exhausted: every page of the Wix site (Home, About Us, Our Menu, Contact, and the “More” nav) rendered through Firecrawl, including the raw HTML of the menu page, whose only embedded description string is the single category paragraph quoted above; the site’s ?menu=cupcakes menu parameter, which returns the same single ICE CREAM FLAVORS menu; every image asset served from the site’s Wix CDN, downloaded and inspected visually — all are product and interior photographs, no photographed menu board or price list; and a web search for a first-party PDF, image menu, or ordering storefront, which found none (Hey Sugar takes no online orders). The Internet Archive holds no capture of the shop’s Wix pages. No descriptions were added, and this is the correct outcome rather than a gap.345

Two traps recorded for future passes. (1) The site’s “More” nav exposes Wix booking pages (“Book a Workshop” — Cupcake Master $115, plus Baking and Frosting service pages) illustrated entirely with Wix stock photography and carrying Wix’s default service names. These are almost certainly unedited template demo content, not offerings of this candy shop, and must not be imported as menu or service items without direct confirmation from the owners. “ (2) A different, unrelated business named “Hey Sugar Candy Store” operates at 144 Century Square Dr, College Station, Texas, and has a Grubhub menu that surfaces in searches for this business. It is not this shop and is not a source for this page.
