Strawberry Hill Brewing Co. is a craft microbrewery at 601 Central Avenue in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, brewing its own beer on site in a family-owned building that had sat vacant before the founders converted it.12 It pours roughly ten house brews on tap, keeps no kitchen, and welcomes outside food.1
Description
Strawberry Hill Brewing Co. brews and pours on Central Avenue at the western edge of the Strawberry Hill business strip, a short walk from Splitlog Coffee Co. and Slap’s BBQ.12 The taproom carries around ten house brews at a time — among them an ESB called Every Spine Breaks (5.7% ABV), the Red Headed German, Even Longer Road Ahead, and two porters, Barrel Me Porter and Carry Me Porter.1 There is no kitchen; the brewery states that outside food is always welcome, and it runs trivia nights, private events, and a set of house drink syrups (Woodruff, strawberry, and rotating seasonal flavors).1
Ownership and history
The brewery was founded by Larry Murray, Ben Murray, Joe Collins, and Philip Kuzila.23 It grew out of an informal home-brew club: Larry Murray and his neighbor Derek Kempf, a Kansas City, Kansas firefighter, brewed a first test batch, and the group expanded as Larry’s brother Ben and friends Phil Kuzila and Joe Collins moved into the Murray house.3 They chose 601 Central Avenue because the building was family-owned and vacant, and because the resurgence of the surrounding blocks — anchored by the openings of Slap’s BBQ and Splitlog Coffee — convinced them the neighborhood could support a brewery.2 The brewery finally opened in September 2024 — roughly eight years from conception, delayed by “children, pandemics, government shutdowns, spine injuries” (three of the four founders had spine issues, later commemorated in the fermenter-tank names).3 All four founders keep day jobs.3
