a second-generation, Chihuahua-rooted family restaurant in KCK’s Strawberry Hill (est. 1999), now run by Perla Garcia across two locations and acclaimed for its birria tacos and tamales.

Description

Tarahumaras is a second-generation Mexican restaurant rooted in Kansas City, Kansas’s Strawberry Hill. Perla Garcia’s parents — originally from Chihuahua, Mexico — opened their first restaurant in 1999 after living in various parts of the metro before settling in Strawberry Hill. Garcia stepped into ownership as a second-generation restaurateur and has helped expand the family business to two locations: the original in Strawberry Hill and a second farther south near I-35 and Merriam Lane.1 The name honors the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people of northern Mexico, reflecting the family’s northern-Mexican roots, and some dishes blend those roots with Midwestern tastes.1

The kitchen is acclaimed for tamales and for its birriaFeast Magazine highlights slow-cooked beef and gooey cheese on crispy tortillas served with a hearty consommé, noting Tarahumaras sells the consommé separately “as if to underscore how good it is.”2 Kansas City Magazine features the restaurant on its KCK Taco Trail coverage of family-owned, immigrant-built taquerias.1
