Chai Cafe is a Pakistani chai house and halal kitchen in the Stanley Square shopping center at 151st Street and U.S. 69 in south Overland Park, opened in late summer 2023 by Sam Rafay, who modeled it on the chai culture of his hometown, Karachi — a lively, family-style place that stays open late to show cricket. The drink list runs ten chais, from kadak and Irani to Kashmiri and a charcoal-smoked koyla chai; the food ranges from halwa puri and Karachi biryani to chaats, fried chicken and “Dubai viral” paratha burgers. After a 2026 renovation the business rebranded as Chai Cafe – Mediterranean Grill & Burgers and now also serves gyros, shawarma and falafel. It has a drive-up window.
Description
Chai Cafe occupies a space on the east side of Stanley Square, the strip center at 151st Street and U.S. Highway 69, next door to Freddy T’s Bar & Grill.1 Its 2023 website led with four promises — premium quality, locally sourced, a drive-up window and online ordering — and the café still offers dine-in, pickup through the window, delivery and catering, with a rewards program through its ordering app.23 Hours are unusual for the suburb: closed Tuesday and Wednesday, evenings only on Monday and Thursday, and open until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.3
The chai is the point. The Johnson County Post’s opening report counted five kinds; the current menu lists ten, including kadak (strong), masala, Irani, ginger, Kashmiri (the pink, salted Kashmiri tea), gur (jaggery-sweetened), a charcoal-smoked koyla chai, a special zafrani saffron chai, a dirty chai with espresso, and green kawa tea, alongside a “desi coffee,” rose milk and a Karachi falooda.14 The food menu began as “smaller snacks like samosas and spring rolls to larger items like burgers, wraps and pizzas”; today it is organized into all-day breakfast (halwa, puri and chole; omelette, aloo-cheese, chicken-cheese and Nutella parathas), quick bites, chaats (pani puri, dahi puri, samosa chaat, papdi chaat), Karachi chicken biryani and butter-chicken platters, crispy fried chicken, garlic-mayo rolls and the “Dubai viral” paratha burgers in chicken and beef.14 The rebranded site adds Mediterranean items — gyros, shawarma, falafel, hummus, baklava — to the “known for” list.3
Everything is halal; Yelp lists the business as “Chai Cafe – 100% Halal Certified Restaurant,” and the café’s own copy calls it “your go-to halal dining spot.”53
Ownership and history
Sam Rafay opened Chai Cafe toward the end of summer 2023.1 He told the Post that the concept came from Karachi, Pakistan, where he grew up: “In our culture, chai is consumed like four times a day. Whenever you go for a hangout, you’ve always got the chai. It brings different people together.”1 He had run a food truck before opening the café, and saw a gap in Overland Park — restaurants with Pakistani influence, but no cafés: “I was looking for something more lively, more vibrant and family-style, where we can stay open a little bit late to show cricket games. That was missing in the city, so I was like, ‘Let’s do it.’”1 At opening he spoke of franchising the concept, opening locations further north, and launching a “Chai Café Express” truck with a shorter menu.1 None of those expansions is documented as having happened.
In 2026 the café renovated and relaunched under a new domain and a longer name, Chai Cafe – Mediterranean Grill & Burgers, with “new everyday low prices” and an expanded grill menu; the Instagram account @chaicafeusa announced the renovation with a giveaway drawn in June 2026.36 The original 2023 site, mychaicafe.com (“Love at First Sip”), remains online with the address and drive-up details.2
