Crazy Good Barbeque – Bar & Eats is the Lemay family’s counter-service barbecue restaurant at the corner of 151st Street and Mur-Len Road in Olathe. It opened May 1, 2015 as Crazy Good Eats, the brick-and-mortar of the family’s Steer Crazy BBQ competition team (two grand championships) and their catering business, and was rebuilt in 2022 with a bourbon bar, a patio deck and live music. Pitmaster Dan Isbell — Maggie and Bruce Lemay’s son-in-law — hand-slices everything; the signatures are the KC Original sandwich and bacon-wrapped “Mad Meatballs.”
Description
The restaurant occupies an end-cap at the northwest corner of 151st Street and Mur-Len Road, in the retail strip that serves south-central Olathe’s subdivisions.1 The City of Olathe’s business blog announced it in May 2015 as the work of “a successful caterer, award-winning BBQ competitor”: Maggie Lemay as owner, Bruce Lemay managing, and Dan Isbell — the couple’s son-in-law — as pitmaster.1 Service was and is counter-style — “dine-in guests order and are served their food at the counter” — with a carry-out counter and a drive-through pickup window for online and call-ahead orders.1
The kitchen’s pitch is competition technique at restaurant scale. “All meat at Crazy Good Barbeque is hand sliced, not on a machine, giving the barbecue a home-prepared feel,” the city’s write-up explained, and the 2015 menu named the house dishes: the KC Original (brisket, pulled pork, bacon and onion strings on one sandwich), Mad Meatballs (bacon-wrapped beef), a Steer Crazy Championship Plate of ribs, brisket, chicken and pork, house-made sausages, and sides of loaded potato casserole, barbecue beans, mac and cheese, coleslaw and fried pickles.1 Feast Magazine’s opening coverage framed it the same way: “competition-style BBQ” from the Steer Crazy team.2
In spring 2022 the restaurant reopened as Crazy Good Barbeque – Bar & Eats with “a gorgeous and swanky bourbon bar,” an outdoor patio deck, live music and an expanded menu with Saturday-night smoked specials and monthly bourbon-tasting dinners.3 “We’re able to expand a bit and have more fun, bring in live music, open the outdoor deck and expand the menu,” Maggie Lemay told HerLife.3 The 2022 menu added a Burnt End Burner sandwich, Aunt Bea’s Salad and a Smoked Cobb alongside the Championship Platter, the KC Original, the potato casserole and the meatballs.3
Ownership and history
Bruce Lemay and Dan Isbell competed as Steer Crazy BBQ, winning two grand championships on the circuit before the family turned the hobby into a catering business and, three years later, a restaurant.1 Crazy Good Eats opened May 1, 2015 at 16695 W 151st St with Maggie Lemay as owner of record; the family continued “consultative catering services” from the restaurant, and catering — weddings in particular — remains a large part of the business, with wedding-vendor listings carrying reviews into 2026.14
The 2022 rebrand to Crazy Good Barbeque – Bar & Eats refreshed the name and logo and added the bar and deck; the family framed it as “the same tender barbecue with a new look.”3 The Lemays are described in the city’s coverage and in the restaurant’s own materials as an Olathe family; no residence outside the metro is indicated.
