Desi Bites is a self-service Indian fast-food counter — order at the register or a kiosk, collect a lidded oval container — tucked into the KC India Mart grocery in a strip behind the Sam’s Club at 135th Street and U.S. 69 in Overland Park. It is the Kansas unit of a Texas-centered franchise chain of the same name that counts fifteen or so stores across the central United States, and it trades on a menu that ranges across the subcontinent: Hyderabadi biryani, Chennai tiffins and dosa, Mumbai chaat, Lucknow kebabs and Indo-Chinese, with day-of-the-week deals posted on Instagram. When KC India Mart moves to its new store on 135th Street, Desi Bites is slated to move with it.

Description

The restaurant is easy to miss. Chuck Munson of The Brazen Gourmets, reviewing it in May 2025, found it “in a small strip mall, which is behind the Sam’s Club on 135th Street and 69 Highway,” “part of the KC India Mart space,” with only a small sign.1 Inside, it is a counter with two ordering kiosks; food arrives “in large oval, plastic containers which come with lids,” which he took as both a portion signal and a takeout convenience.1 Instagram’s bio states the brand’s positioning: “the Modern, Upscale Self Service Indian Fast Food Cafe, famous for its traditional Indian cuisine.”2

The menu is broad by design. The chain’s own statement is that it covers “the Tiffin centers of Chennai, Biryani Cafes of Hyderabad, Chats from Streets of Mumbai, Kebabs of Lucknow, Indo-Chinese Delicacies of Kolkata and Delhi’s famous Mughlai Cuisine,” with a motto of “NO FOOD FROZEN EVER.”3 Munson’s own sampling — channa masala (which he graded an “A”), vegetable biryani, onion pakora, a mango lassi and Irani chai — sat within a board of “tandoori dishes, dosa, chats, tiffins, parotta, wings, kebabs, pulavs, curries, and much more.”1 The Johnson County Post named aloo tikki chaat, donne mutton biryani and murgh malai boti among the items.4 The Kansas store’s Instagram runs a weekly rhythm of promotions — Monday specials, a Tuesday dosa deal, “Tandoori Thursdays,” a Friday biryani deal and “Weekend Chaat Nights.”2

Reception is mixed in the way a grocery-store food court’s often is: Restaurantji’s 250 reviews average 3.3 stars, split between five-star praise for the biryani and the prices and one-star complaints about cleanliness and portions; Yelp shows 40 reviews as of July 2026.56

Ownership and history

Desi Bites is a brand, not a single restaurant. Munson counted “a national chain, with 15 locations, mostly in the central U.S.”; Texas units in Irving and Frisco are documented, and a Leander, Texas store was being built out in 2025 by a franchisee, Pruthvi Thummalapally, who signed on “after meeting with representatives” of the chain — the clearest statement found that Desi Bites expands by franchising.1738 The brand’s headquarters, founders and founding year were not found on its website, which is a JavaScript ordering shell, or in press.9

The Overland Park unit’s local operator is not named. The Johnson County Post, reporting on KC India Mart’s expansion plans in March 2024, wrote that the grocery “operates a partnership with Desi Bites,” and that Desi Bites would relocate with the mart to its new 13,000-square-foot store approved for 8201 W. 135th Street, to open “before its current lease runs out in 2026.”4 Whether the KC India Mart owners are themselves the franchisee is the central open question. Review and listing history places the opening in late 2021: Restaurantji’s earliest reviews are from November 2021 and the Tripadvisor listing dates from about 2022.510

Status: unverified. The chain’s website (desibites.com/menu) loads by script and could not be read; no store-specific first-party menu with prices is published, and aggregator menus are not used per Registry rules. What first-party and press sources establish: biryanis (including donne mutton biryani), dosa and tiffins, chaat (aloo tikki chaat), tandoori and kebabs (murgh malai boti), parotta, pulao, curries (channa masala), Indo-Chinese, wings, pakora, mango lassi and Irani chai, with rotating daily deals.241
