Weekend barbecue joint in downtown Grandview run by jazz saxophonist and American Jazz Museum entertainment director Gerald Dunn, blending East Texas and Kansas City styles with a Southwest chili accent — and known to sell out most Saturdays.
Description
Dunn Deal BBQ is a weekend-only barbecue operation in downtown Grandview serving Texas- and Kansas City-influenced smoked meats with a Southwest flavor profile built on different chilis. The menu runs brisket, ribs, pulled pork, turkey, chicken, and sausage, with sides including french fries, coleslaw, potato salad, and baked beans; owner Gerald Dunn’s daughter makes the banana pudding. Dunn smokes over hickory and white oak, starting his brisket Thursday nights, and typically operates Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until he sells out — often around 4 p.m. 1
Ownership and history
Owner and pitmaster Gerald Dunn is a longtime Kansas City jazz figure — a saxophonist, radio personality, and director of entertainment at the American Jazz Museum and its Blue Room club, and bandleader of the combo Jazz Disciples. 2 He grew up in East Texas, where his grandfather was a pitmaster near the Louisiana line, and learned the craft using his grandfather’s methods with family-tweaked seasonings (mustard, cinnamon, cumin). After years of catering events, Dunn opened Dunn Deal BBQ in early 2024 at 506 Main Street in Grandview, in the former Lueck’s Barbecue & General Store space, running it as a weekend side project alongside his music career. 1 3
