El Plato Mexican Grill & Cantina is the Rivera family’s Mexican restaurant in downtown Lee’s Summit — 22 SW 3rd St, across from the Amtrak depot in the Strother District — a full-menu Mexican-American grill and bar with all-day breakfast (huevos con chorizo, machaca, chilaquiles), a ten-plate lunch list, fajitas up to a “trio” with a hot-and-spicy option, a $29.95 molcajete, street tacos, tortas and a happy hour. Fredy Rivera and his daughter Saray Pilar Nonato own it; in 2025 they partnered with another family to open Muy Caliente in Brookside.

Description

El Plato occupies a storefront at 22 SW 3rd St, in the block of downtown Lee’s Summit that the district’s marketing calls the Strother District, next to the Amtrak platform; its own site frames the location as “near the Amtrak Station.”12 Downtown Lee’s Summit’s directory lists it under Food + Drink; the city’s tourism site describes it as “a Tex-Mex style restaurant in downtown Lee’s Summit serving up traditional cuisines and margaritas with weekly specials.”34 The Strother District page calls it simply a “Family Owned Mexican Restaurant” with daily specials — hard-shell and soft tacos, fajita burritos, and a house dish called La Pechuga — and a Monday–Thursday happy hour.2

The menu is broad and priced for a downtown lunch crowd. A breakfast section runs all day: huevos con chorizo, con jamón, a la mexicana and con papa, a breakfast burrito, chilaquiles and machaca, all $12.05; a numbered lunch list of ten plates is the same price.5 Dinner-scale plates include La Pechuga (marinated chicken breast under queso blanco with a skewer of shrimp), a marinated-pork plate in green, red or mild sauce, carne asada and milanesa platos, “Plato Mi Tierra” (steak, peppers, onions, chorizo, hot sauce), and El Molcajete — chicken, shrimp, steak, chorizo, cactus, cheese and jalapeño in the stone bowl — at $29.95.5 Fajitas come in chicken, steak, shrimp, veggie and trio, each with a “Hot & Spicy” version; birria appears as “Las 3 Chaparritas,” crisp tortillas griddled with cheese and shredded beef with consommé.5 Street tacos (asada, pastor, pollo a la parrilla, puerco, avocado, campechanos, fish), tortas, quesadillas, enchiladas — including one named Muy Caliente — burritos, a kids’ list and sides fill out the card.5

Ownership and history

El Plato is owned by Fredy Rivera and his oldest daughter, Saray Pilar Nonato.6 The Kansas City Star’s Joyce Smith, writing for Startland in June 2025, reported that the two had “worked in Mexican restaurants across the area” before opening their own, and that they “also own El Plato Mexican Grill & Cantina in Lee’s Summit.”6 The restaurant’s Instagram handle, @elplato2023, dates the opening to 2023; the month is not documented.2

In 2025 the Riveras expanded — not with a second El Plato but a joint venture. With longtime friend Noel Ramos and his daughter Gepsiva Ramos they opened Muy Caliente Mexican Grill & Cantina at 751 E 63rd St in Brookside on August 14, 2025, in the former Brady & Fox space; the Ramos family runs that restaurant’s day-to-day.6 Muy Caliente’s menu shares the Rivera family DNA — quesabirrias, a molcajete, an enchilada plate — and El Plato returns the compliment with a “Muy Caliente Enchiladas” line.
