Hira's Steak & Sushi

Hira’s Steak & Sushi is an independent hibachi-and-sushi house at 15202 W 119th St in Olathe, west of Black Bob Road. It opened under the name Haru’s and renamed itself Hira’s on February 16, 2015, to stop being mistaken for a national chain that shares the old name — a change the owners framed as a declaration of independence: “our devotion to customer service and value to a level not possible with profit-first large entities.” Teppanyaki tables with the full show, a long special-roll list, a sub-$10 lunch hibachi, and house-made sauces with “no preservatives, artificial colors or MSG.”

Description

Hira’s sits on the south side of 119th Street in a strip of restaurants and services between Black Bob and Mur-Len Roads, in Olathe’s 119th Street commercial corridor.¹ The dining room is built around hibachi tables — the site’s own gallery and reviews center on the teppanyaki show — with a sushi bar and a full liquor list of call drinks at $6.² The house line on the site reads: “Our Company Seeks to Provide Quality Food at Affordable Prices to create the Greatest value for all customers that step foot into our restaurant.”¹

The hibachi menu is the core: at dinner, vegetables ($12.95), chicken teriyaki ($13.95), calamari, jumbo shrimp, scallops, sushi-grade salmon, KC strip, lobster and filet mignon (6-oz and 12-oz), and a long grid of two-protein combinations from steak & chicken ($22.50) to scallops & lobster ($29.95), all served with soup and salad, a shrimp appetizer and vegetables; fried rice is $2.50 extra and sharing an entrée costs $7.50.² A lunch hibachi special before 2:30 p.m. runs $7.95 (vegetable) to $17.95 (steak), and a sushi roll special — one, two or three rolls from a list of twenty-odd with miso soup or salad, $7.25–$13.25 — runs the same window seven days.³²

The special rolls keep the old name on the board — the Haru’s Roll (shrimp, crab, cream cheese, spicy mayo, avocado, tempura flakes, fish egg) heads the list — alongside a Volcano, Las Vegas, Rainbow, Spicy Girl, KC Chef, Kansas Roll, Green Dragon, Pink Lady, Eel Heroes, and a Lobster Moto at $22.95.² Nigiri and sashimi are two pieces per order at $4–$8 (bluefin $8, fatty tuna market price); the kitchen list adds yakisoba, katsu, fried rice and a “Hira’s Steak” (Angus, fried egg, soba noodles, $21.95).³ The menu footer promises house-made sauces with “no preservatives, artificial colors or MSG” and gluten-free cooking on request.²

Ownership and history

The restaurant opened as Haru’s Steak and Sushi; Tripadvisor reviews under that name date from mid-2014, and a March 2015 review notes the business “had been sold” and was operating as Hira’s, though no source confirms a change of hands beyond that single review.⁴ The official account is the “About” page’s notice, still posted a decade later:

“Starting Feb 16, 2015, we are changing the name of our restaurant to Hira’s Steak and Sushi. The name change is intended to distinguish the locally owned Olathe restaurant from those owned by a national chain using the same Haru’s name, and to avoid any confusion between the two entities.”⁵

The same notice lays out the house “traditions”: “our presentation of novel creations as opposed to the cookie-cutter offerings made by others”; “our devotion to customer service and value to a level not possible with profit-first large entities”; and “we wish to confirm our identity within our community here. We are happy with where we are, and with what we do. And now we will be called Hira’s.”⁵

No owner is named on the site or in any press; the Kansas City papers and the Johnson County Post have not covered the restaurant. The site is built on the Honorpos restaurant-POS platform.¹
