Iron Grill

Iron Grill is the smash-burger counter at the Iron District container park, 1599 Iron Street, Unit H, North Kansas City. It is not an independent tenant: The Pitch reported in September 2023 that Iron Grill is “the Iron District’s first in-house project, meaning that it’s owned and operated by the same team that owns the property as a whole,” and the ChowNow account behind its ordering page is registered to Iron District LLC. Description

Iron Grill is the burger counter inside the Iron District, the repurposed-shipping-container food and retail park that opened at 1599 Iron Street in North Kansas City in 2019.¹ Unlike the district’s other food tenants — the-sourdough-spot, hot-chicks-kc, Tattooed Hog BBQ and the rest, each an independent small business renting a container — Iron Grill is a house brand. The Pitch’s September 2023 tour of the park described it as “the Iron District’s first in-house project, meaning that it’s owned and operated by the same team that owns the property as a whole.”² That relationship is corroborated first-party: the ChowNow ordering account serving the Iron Grill storefront is registered to Iron District LLC, at 1599 Iron Street, Units H, I & E.³

General and marketing manager Madison Moore explained the reasoning to The Pitch: “We were able to incorporate what we’ve learned from our vendors. We have a lot of factories and blue-collar jobs in the area. We wanted something that was the right price point for the workers to come up and grab something for lunch. Smash burgers are quick, and it’s easy to collaborate with other vendors.”² The clearest example of that collaboration was the Elephant Wings Smash — a crossover with neighboring Indian-fusion vendor Elephant Wings that debuted on 2023-08-04 and sold out within a day.²

The menu is short and numbered: five burgers running $9 to $12, kids’ items, beer-battered fries, onion rings, and loaded Smash Fries.⁴ Iron Grill returned for the Iron District’s spring 2026 season alongside Cargo Cantina, at a point when food service director Phillip Jones told Startland News the park is “getting away from the incubator concept but we would still like to help people grow.”¹ KCUR’s April 2026 survey of the park likewise lists Iron Grill among the current lineup.⁵ The Pitch reviewed the burgers again in a Dish & Drink KC column, calling the patty “well-seasoned, with that crispy, caramelized edge you want in a smash burger.”⁶
