Jasper's Restaurant

Jasper’s is Kansas City’s oldest Italian family restaurant — founded in 1954 by Sicilian immigrant Leonardo Mirabile and his Kansas City–born son Jasper, and still run by the Mirabile family three generations later. J.J. (Jasper Jr.) and his brothers Leonard and Jasper III (“3J”) carry on at 1201 W. 103rd St., the same family that started with pizza and meatballs in Waldo and built KC’s most decorated Italian dining room over 71 years.

Description

Jasper’s is Kansas City’s oldest Italian family restaurant — and one of its most storied. Leonardo Mirabile left Sicily at sixteen, worked his way through the South, and arrived in Kansas City around 1930, where his son Jasper was born. In 1954, father and son opened a small pizza and meatball restaurant at 405 W. 75th Street in Waldo. Over four decades at that address, Jasper’s evolved from a neighborhood Italian spot into one of the most decorated dining rooms in the region, earning visits from Walter Cronkite, Ed McMahon, and, reportedly, a papal endorsement (Cardinal Baum is said to have told Pope John Paul II about the angel hair pasta). The family moved in 1998 to the current Watts Mill location at 103rd and State Line. Today J.J. Mirabile (Jasper Jr.), his brother Leonard, and nephew Jasper III (“3J”) run both the restaurant and the adjacent Marco Polo’s Italian Market, maintaining the family’s daily presence across every aspect of the operation. “Being part of Kansas City’s most award-winning restaurant is more than tradition for the Mirabile family — it’s a way of life.”¹
