Kababesh Grill is a long-running Pakistani-and-Indian restaurant at 10142 W 119th St in Overland Park — a “homey cafe” in its own words, fully zabiha-halal, that runs à la carte dinners midweek and $20 buffets Friday through Sunday. The kitchen is credited to chef Zubair Shah, and the menu is unmistakably Pakistani where it counts: nihari, paya, haleem, chapli kabab, karahi in three meats, and a “Daal Kababish” that carries the house name.
Description
Kababesh Grill sits in a strip center on the south side of 119th Street just east of Quivira, in the restaurant-dense stretch of 119th that runs west from Metcalf.1 The site’s own tagline is modest and accurate: “Homey cafe for Indian & Pakistani specialties served buffet-style at lunch & à la carte at dinner.”1 The halal directory Zabihah adds the kitchen credit — “authentic Indian & Pakistani cuisine by Master Chef Zubair Shah” — and the operating pattern: daily lunch buffets in earlier years, weekend dinner buffets and a Sunday brunch buffet.2 The current schedule on the official site is narrower: dinner only Tuesday through Thursday, buffet lunch plus dinner Friday through Sunday, closed Monday.13
The à la carte menu is organized the Pakistani way. A Grills section covers the tandoor — chicken tikka, seekh kabab, chicken and lamb boti, hariyali chicken, garlic tandoori shrimp, kabab rolls — and a separate Griddle (Tawa) section carries beef or chicken qeema and chapli kabab.3 The Specialty Dishes trio is the tell: nihari, paya and haleem, the slow-cooked Lahori and Karachi standards that Indian-leaning restaurants in the metro rarely bother with.3 Karahi is offered in chicken, beef, and lamb or goat; do piaza, korma, saag and vindaloo repeat across the meats; there is a seafood section with fish and prawn masala, and a vegetable list headed by a house lentil dish, Daal Kababish.3 Biryani comes in chicken, goat/lamb, beef, shrimp and vegetable versions; breads include onion and paneer kulcha and keema paratha; desserts run kheer, ras malai, gulab jamun, gajar ka halwa and gajrela.3
Zabihah’s entry — the restaurant’s most detailed third-party record — notes that alcohol is not a factor in the halal call, that the owners “have confirmed its halal status,” and that prayer is allowed on request; it carries reviews as recent as January 2026.2 Yelp files the restaurant under Indian with 54 reviews as of June 2026.4
Ownership and history
The public record names the chef but not the owners. Zabihah credits “Master Chef Zubair Shah” and states the owners are Muslim; the official site names no one and its footer copyright still reads 2018, though the menu, hours and second-location notice on it are current.21 No Kansas City press coverage of Kababesh was found — not in the KC Star, The Pitch, KC Magazine or the Johnson County Post — which is typical of the 119th Street South Asian restaurants that serve a community clientele rather than a reviewed one.
The opening date is likewise unconfirmed. Third-party listings (Tripadvisor, Foursquare, a Facebook page with posts from 2011) place the restaurant on 119th by the early 2010s at the latest; the precise year is a gap.
In 2025–26 the site added a Kirksville, Missouri location at 1101 E Normal Ave — labeled “New Location,” to-go only, with its own hours and phone — some 200 miles northeast of the metro.1 It is outside the Registry’s geographic scope and gets no page.
