Kushi Indian Restaurant opened in spring 2024 in the Heatherwood Village center at 14856 Metcalf Ave, southern Overland Park, in a space that had been a catering kitchen and before that a Chinese restaurant. It is an Indian restaurant of the Telugu-Hyderabadi kind — idli-vada-dosa breakfasts, Hyderabadi dum biryani and gongura everything, “65” and Manchurian starters, Indo-Chinese fried rice, wing buckets — with halal-sourced meats and hours that run to 1 a.m. on weekends. Despite the name, it is not Japanese.

Description

Kushi is in the Heatherwood Village strip on the west side of Metcalf just south of 149th Street, a few doors from Daylight Donuts and Papa Keno’s, in the far-south Overland Park corridor where Metcalf runs toward 151st.1 The Johnson County Post reported the coming opening in April 2024, noting the space had most recently been Sage Bites Bistro & Marketplace, a catering company and charcuterie-board maker, and before that Andy’s Wok.1

The restaurant’s own “About” copy is generic — “authentic Indian flavors crafted with the finest ingredients and time-honored recipes” — but the menu is specific.2 The Breakfast board is South Indian tiffin: idli, ghee karam idli, vada, upma, pongal, pulihora, Mysore bonda, punugulu, poori, plain and masala dosas, pesarattu (including an “MLA” upma pesarattu), halwa poori and chole bhature, with idli-vada-pongal combos around $10–$13.3 The Appetizer list is the Andhra restaurant canon — aloo/gobi/paneer/chicken/fish 65, Manchurian, chilli and Schezwan preparations, karapodi (gunpowder) and curry-leaf (“karivepaku”) chicken and goat, gongura goat, 555 shrimp — plus a wing bucket in eight, fourteen or twenty-one pieces with ten sauce choices.3 Biryani runs from Hyderabadi chicken dum biryani ($12.99) through gongura, Vijayawada, fry-piece and wing-chicken versions to goat dum, mutton ghee roast, shrimp and fish; there is a paneer and a gutti-vankaya (stuffed eggplant) vegetarian biryani.3 Curries cover the North Indian standards (butter chicken, tikka masala, saag, vindaloo, malai kofta) alongside Andhra chicken curry and gongura chicken; tandoori, Indo-Chinese noodles, chaat, and a short specials list of haleem and paya round it out.3

Every menu panel carries the line “Chicken/Mutton/Lamb sourced from Zabiha Halal Certified sources only.”3 Hours are long — 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on weeknights, past midnight Friday through Sunday, with 8 a.m. weekend openings for breakfast — and the site lists catering with an inquiry form and delivery through Uber Eats and Postmates in addition to its own Orders.co page.2

Ownership and history

No owner is named on the site, in the Johnson County Post’s report, or in the visitor-bureau listings; the Post’s April 2024 piece carried no quotes from the operators and noted the restaurant “has yet to publicize its exact opening date or regular hours online.”1 The Post’s year-end roundup lists “Kushi Indian Restaurant, 14856 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park” among the businesses that opened in April 2024.4 The restaurant’s Facebook page was created in the winter of 2023–24 ahead of opening.2

The name Kushi (Telugu/Hindi khushi, “happiness”) and the Andhra-heavy menu place the restaurant within the Telugu-community restaurant wave that has reached Johnson County in the 2020s.
