Paleteria El Chavo is a Mexican paletería and antojitos counter on East 23rd Street in Independence, open since May 2015 and running 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. It is the kind of place that is half ice-cream parlor and half taquería: paletas, nieves, mangonadas, fresas con crema and fruit cups with chamoy on one side of the menu, and tacos, tortas, quesabirrias, chilaquiles, burgers and fresh-pressed juices on the other. A second store opened in Grandview in March 2024.

Description

Paleteria El Chavo occupies a storefront on the south side of East 23rd Street in Independence, roughly a mile east of the Kansas City line, and describes itself as “a cherished part of the Independence, MO community” with a mission of “turning simple moments into extraordinary memories” through ice cream and Mexican treats.1 The hours — 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., every day — are unusual for a neighborhood shop and put it in the late-night category.2

The menu is long and numbered, in the paletería-plus-cocina style common on the East Side and in eastern Jackson County.3 The frozen side runs from natural and “gourmet” paletas ($2.89 / $3.20) through nieves by the scoop, banana splits, esquimales, chocobananas and mangonadas in three sizes; the fruit side has cocktail de fruta with Tajín, a “Tornado” (jicama, orange, pineapple, Sierra Mist, chamoy, peanuts), fresas con crema, piña loca, escamocha and elote en vaso; and the “crazy snacks” list has Dorilocos, Tostilocos, papas locas, pepino loco and a chilindrina.3 Juices are pressed to order — a “Jugo Vampiro” of celery, orange, carrot and beet, a “Jugo Verde” with cactus and grapefruit — and there is a short coffee bar with champurrado and Nescafé con leche.3

The savory menu is a full taquería: tacos at $2.85 apiece, tacos dorados, fish and shrimp tacos, quesabirrias, tortas (clásica, hawaiiana, cubana, salchicha, huevo con chorizo), a pambazo, sopes, huaraches, gorditas de maíz and de harina, chilaquiles with eggs, enchiladas verdes, burritos and burrito bowls, plus a set of burgers (Hawaiian, Mexican, guacamole, “El Chavo”) and wings.3 Desserts are tres leches, flan, chocoflan and churros.3 The shop’s own site headlines tacos and tamales as specialties.1

Ownership and history

The official site dates the Independence opening to May 10, 2015, and the Grandview location to March 7, 2024.1 No owner is named on the site, the ordering site, or in any press we could find; no metro outlet appears to have profiled the shop. The site is built on a template credited to “DTL-GLOBAL,” a web vendor, not an operator.1

The two stores share the site, the menu and the branding; each has its own phone, email and social accounts (@paleteriaelchavo for Independence, @paleteriaelchavograndview for Grandview).2 The Grandview store keeps slightly shorter hours (9–10 Sun–Thu, 9–11 Fri–Sat).2
