Colby + Megan Garrelts modern-Midwest comfort-food operation; continues the Garreltses’ KC restaurant operation after Bluestem’s December 2020 closure. Colby is KC-native + James Beard Best Chef Midwest winner.

Description

Rye is the second Garrelts chef-owner operation, complementing Bluestem’s fine-dining identity with a modern Midwest comfort food approach. Where Bluestem was 2004-2020 Westport-fine-dining, Rye operates at the comfort-food register — biscuits & gravy with sweet favorites like cinnamon rolls + daily-made donuts.1

After Bluestem closed in December 2020, Rye continues as the Garreltses’ KC restaurant operation. The chef-owner partnership of Colby + Megan Garrelts persists — Colby’s KC-native status + James Beard pedigree + Megan’s national-recognized pastry-chef work all anchor Rye’s continuing identity.

Tier classification

Tier 1 — KC-native chef-owner operation; founder-led; independent.

Criterion match: Colby Garrelts is KC-native (grew up in KC); founder-led + chef-owned; independent (not chain; not corporate); 22-year combined Garrelts-couple KC restaurant operation across both Bluestem + Rye.
