Sammy’s Tavern was a corner dive bar at 222 N 6th St, at N 6th and Tenny Ave in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas. It occupied a building constructed in 1930 and was one of the eight-or-so bars Kansas City Magazine surveyed in 2021 when it argued Strawberry Hill holds “the best collection of dive bars in America”; that survey named Joni Bocelewatz — owner of fat-matts-vortex three blocks up the same street — as Sammy’s owner as well. Sammy’s closed on June 28, 2026, and the property went on the market in July 2026 at $385,000, bundling the bar with two apartments above it and a detached two-car garage. registry_status: closed — closure is carried by dated KCTV5 reporting.12

Description

Sammy’s Tavern was a low-ceilinged corner bar on the N 6th Street run through Strawberry Hill — the same short stretch that holds fat-matts-vortex at 411 N 6th and the-easy-inn at 322 N 6th, with chicagos-kck around the corner at 6th and Central and johnnies-sports-bar-kck a few blocks south.

Kansas City Magazine’s June 2021 dive-bar survey of the neighborhood gave the fullest published character sketch: it reported that illegal card games had run in the back room years earlier, noted “a couple of poker paintings” on the walls, and described a “hard-to-miss ‘We don’t want nobody nobody sent’ attitude toward interlopers.”1

By 2026 the bar had also become a World Cup gathering point; KCTV5 reported that soccer banners were still hanging outside the building after it closed.2

Ownership and history

Kansas City Magazine (June 28, 2021) names Joni Bocelewatz as Sammy’s owner and identifies her as the owner of Fat Matt’s Vortex, three blocks north at 411 N 6th St — the same article that documents her 2004 purchase and desegregation of that bar.1 This is the only published ownership attribution located for Sammy’s.

Whether Bocelewatz still held Sammy’s at closing is not established. Hoodline’s July 2026 item describes the bar as having closed “after nearly nine years under the current management,” which — if accurate — would place a management change around 2017, after the 2021 magazine piece was already in preparation and in tension with it. That secondary claim could not be opened directly (the page returns HTTP 403) and is recorded here as unconfirmed rather than adopted. ****

No founding year for the tavern has been located in published sources. The building dates to 1930, per KCTV5, but the building’s age is not the business’s age and the two must not be conflated.2

Last verified: 2026-08-14 · Source: none — no first-party menu or drink list survives in any recoverable form · Confidence: High that the absence is real and now exhausted; no confidence in any item or price, because none is sourced.

Confirmed absence of a recoverable first-party menu (re-checked 2026-08-14, extending the 2026-08-13 pass). menu_status: unavailable. For a bar, the drink list is the menu; Sammy’s published no drink list that survives, and no prices at all are recorded on this page.

Correction to the 2026-08-13 finding. That pass reported “no own domain located.” That was wrong: sammystavernkck.com did exist, and the Internet Archive holds a URL from it dated 2019-12-26 for a post titled “karaoke night,” which establishes the site ran as a WordPress install with dated posts.3 The correction does not change the outcome, and the domain is now a dead end for three separate reasons: no capture of the site’s content was preserved (the 2019 post URL archived only as a 301, with no body); by April 2021 the root served a DreamHost “sammystavernkck.com is almost here!” placeholder, meaning the site had already been wiped;3 and a later capture shows the domain hijacked into SEO spam (an unrelated matlab-discretize page). The domain no longer resolves — DNS returns no A record for sammystavernkck.com, sammystavern.com or sammysonthehill.com.

On whether Sammy’s served food at all. It presented as a drinks-only neighborhood bar; Kansas City Magazine’s survey describes a dive-bar character and records no kitchen.1 Consistent with that, food at Sammy’s appears to have arrived via visiting pop-up vendors rather than an in-house kitchen — a mobile hot-dog operator publicly announced it would be serving at Sammy’s on a given Friday night. That vendor’s food is the vendor’s, not Sammy’s, and is not recorded as this business’s menu. ****

Why unavailable and not another status. Not historical — that status records a closed food business’s menu as of last publication, and here there is no last-published menu to record. Not na — Sammy’s was a drink-serving business, so a drink list would have been its menu; the category applies, the artifact is simply gone. Not partial — zero first-party items were recovered.

Ceiling — do not re-spend on this. The following are now closed and should not be repeated: web search, DNS across the three domain spellings, Internet Archive CDX for those domains, and the aggregator sweep (Grubhub, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Restaurantji — all barred for pricing regardless). Because the business closed on June 28, 2026, the two routes that normally rescue a menu — an in-store photograph and a phone call — are both permanently unavailable here. The only remaining possibility is a logged-in session on the Facebook page (facebook.com/sammysonthehill), scrolling its photo history for a menu or drink-price image posted before closure; the page was still up as of this pass but returns title metadata only to automated retrieval.4 If that turns up nothing, this is genuinely unrecoverable and the status is final.

Disputes

  • Length of operation at closing — RESOLVED 2026-08-14. The 2026-08-13 pass could not open Hoodline (HTTP 403) and left the “nearly nine years” claim unverified. It has now been read via the Internet Archive.5 The tension dissolves: Hoodline’s “nearly nine years” is not a claim about the bar’s age and not in conflict with KCTV5’s “for decades.” It tracks the tenure of general manager Lindsey Alt-Cash, who wrote in a June 23, 2026 Facebook post that “it has been a wonderful, almost 9 years, loving you guys as family. we will move forward with many memories to cherish, and ones we will never forget.”5 The bar is old; the GM’s run was about nine years. Both sources stand.
  • Note on what this does not settle. Alt-Cash is identified as general manager, not owner. This neither confirms nor displaces Joni Bocelewatz as owner of record at closing — a GM is not a licensee. The ownership question below remains open.
