Description

Society is a multi-concept venue — restaurant, bar, lounge, nightclub, event space, and art gallery — in the heart of Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District, occupying the former Jacobson space directly across from the Crossroads Hotel.12 Majority owner Scott Mars has described the goal as building “a sophisticated entertainment district” in concert with the surrounding Crossroads nightlife.2 The venue offers an American-style food concept (with sushi), cocktails on tap, a roughly 2,500-square-foot patio, and a glittering open main room described as “restaurant-meets-club-meets-art-gallery.”23 The intimate Scarlet Room sits inside the same building — one building, two concepts, sharing an entrance.4

What earns Society its place in the dance-scene Registry, however, is its recurring “Latin Night.” Held every Wednesday and Friday, it is described by KCUR as one of the city’s biggest weekly Latin social-dance gatherings.56 Salsa dancing runs 8–10 p.m. with more upbeat music (bachata, cumbia, merengue) carrying the floor onward to 1 a.m.; the room has space to dance throughout.56 DJ Zammy Martinez spins the night’s salsa, bachata, cumbia, and merengue, and serves as its de facto host; dancers twist their shoes in a pile of white powder on the floor to make their feet glide.5 Wednesdays lead with salsa, Fridays lean bachata.6 The night began in 2021 as a place for local dance students to keep practicing after their Wednesday class let out, then “took on a life of its own” into a genuine community.5

Ownership and history

Society opened in 2021 (grand opening reported May 2021 by The Pitch) in the Crossroads, the venture of three partners: Scott Mars (majority owner), Scott Genter, and Michael Thomas Edmondson.27 Mars’ food-and-beverage background in Kansas City includes the Westport Ale House and the now-closed Parkway Social on the Plaza, and his stated ambition for Society was to anchor a more sophisticated entertainment corridor in the Crossroads alongside the Crossroads Hotel.28

The Latin Night programming was not part of the original concept. Per KCUR’s August 2024 feature, it grew organically out of local salsa/bachata students who needed somewhere to keep dancing after their Wednesday class ended in 2021; what began as informal after-class practice turned into one of KC’s marquee weekly Latin socials, with DJ Zammy Martinez at its center.5 The lessons and floor culture are community-driven rather than run by a single named in-house dance instructor.5

The venue’s official contact address is 2050 Central St, Kansas City, MO 64108 (used by the official sites for Society and the Scarlet Room).4 Some listings (Yelp; IN Kansas City) give the physical/visiting address as 2040 Central St — the same single building that houses both Society and the Scarlet Room, entered from across the Crossroads Hotel.14 Pinning 2050 Central St per the official contact address; the 2040/2050 split is a one-building, two-concept artifact.
