Spice N Rice is a fully halal, alcohol-free Indian restaurant in The Fountains shopping center at 119th and Glenwood in Overland Park — “behind the Cheesecake Factory,” as its own directions put it — serving since 2015. The owner, Robin, works the line himself; the kitchen butchers its meat on premises, hand-rolls every naan to order, keeps separate fryers and a divided buffet for vegetarian and meat cooking, and says 80 percent of the menu is dairy-free. A 50-seat private room and a separate catering operation round it out. KCUR’s November 2025 South Asian roundup photographed its butter chicken, samosas and naan as “some of the most popular offerings.”

Description

Spice N Rice sits in an inline space in The Fountains, the retail cluster on the north side of 119th Street between Metcalf and Nall, on the strip behind The Cheesecake Factory.1 Its own copy describes “the perfect combination of fast convenient service and a relaxed dining atmosphere,” open every day without a mid-afternoon close, with dine-in, pickup and local delivery through its Square storefront and a catering site built for office lunches.12 The restaurant also lets groups reserve a private room seating up to 50, with a flat-screen for presentations.13

What sets it apart in Johnson County’s crowded Indian market is the halal-and-dietary regime. The restaurant is fully halal with no alcohol served; Zabihah records a halal certificate on file.4 The kitchen “butchers meats on premises to ensure freshness,” and “every naan bread is hand rolled and baked upon order.”4 For vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diners it runs two separate sets of fryers, splits the buffet into vegetarian and omnivore sides, cooks its rice dairy-free in vegetable oil, and marks vegan and gluten-free items on the menu; most appetizers are chickpea-flour based.13

The menu itself runs the subcontinent: Indo-Chinese small plates (gobi Manchurian, chili paneer, chicken 65); samosas, pakoras and a Pakistani-leaning Peshawari chapli kabab; four chaats; a tandoori section of chicken tikka, achari and seekh kababs and a mixed grill; eight biryanis from vegetable to goat; long chicken, lamb and shrimp curry lists including the South Indian chettinad and Keralan malabari preparations; a dozen vegetarian curries; vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis; fish and chips; and a children’s menu.5 KCUR’s 2025 listener roundup used a photo of the restaurant’s butter chicken, samosas and naan as its illustration of the metro’s popular South Asian dishes.6

Ownership and history

The restaurant has been “serving you since 2015” and is “locally owned and operated,” by its own account.1 Its catering site introduces the owner only by first name: “Our owner, Robin, takes pride in getting to know his customers and is ready to prepare your meals fresh … You’ll see him hard at work right alongside his dedicated staff.”3 Dun & Bradstreet’s record for the operating company, Spice N Rice, Inc. of Overland Park, lists a key principal named Robin Rary; the surname has not been confirmed against any other source.7 The same page describes a dining-room expansion “a few months ago” and the launch of a buffet mixing northern and southern dishes, undated.3

Nothing further — the owner’s background, prior ventures, or how the concept was financed — has surfaced in local press; the restaurant’s coverage is limited to directory listings and the KCUR listener list.
