Sushi UNI is a small, busy, owner-run sushi and hibachi restaurant in the Rosehill Pointe strip at 87th Street Parkway and Rosehill Road in Lenexa, opened in 2014 by Jason and Landy Liu, who chose the letters U-N-I to stand for “you and I.” It built its following on fast, affordable lunch deals — any three rolls with soup or salad and two crab rangoon for under $15 — a chalkboard of specialty rolls drawn from what regulars order, and a kitchen that also turns out teriyaki, hibachi and Chinese-American plates. Johnson County Post readers named it Best Japanese in the Post’s Best of Johnson County 2024, and it was a Best Sushi finalist in The Pitch’s Best of KC 2025.
Description
Sushi UNI is an inline unit in the Rosehill Pointe strip on the south side of 87th Street Parkway at Rosehill Road, sharing the center with Black Dog Coffeehouse.12 “It may look plucky and small from the outside, but its menu packs quite a punch,” the Johnson County Post wrote when readers voted it one of the county’s five best sushi bars in 2022; one regular recommended arriving before 11 to beat the lunch line.2 IN Kansas City’s 2024 sushi survey called it “fast, affordable, and quality sushi” and noted the chalkboard of daily specialty rolls “based on dishes the regulars often order,” suggesting the large sushi-sashimi combination platters for two or a sashimi appetizer with a glass of sauvignon blanc for one.1
The menu is built for the lunch trade. The U.N.I. Sushi Lunch offers any one, two or three rolls from a list with two crab rangoon and soup or salad ($10.95–14.95); the U.N.I. Lunch applies the same format to teriyaki, hibachi and Chinese-American plates ($12.95); assorted sushi and sashimi lunches follow.3 The full card runs from Japanese salads (wakame, ika sansai, baby octopus, sunomono) and small plates (hamachi kama, baked mussels, tempura soft-shell crab, tuna tataki, yellowtail-jalapeño sashimi, gyoza) through fried rice, lo mein and noodles, kitchen entrées (teriyaki, hibachi, General Tso’s, a grilled sea bass), sushi entrées and forty-odd rolls from kappa maki to a Dragon and a Rainbow.3 The site itself promises “quality ingredients, generous portions, and friendly service,” “always with healthy and vegetarian options,” and republishes reviews that mention the owners “always onsite.”4
Ownership and history
Jason and Landy Liu opened Sushi UNI in 2014.1 “Owners Jason and Landy Liu put the U N I in the name to stand for ‘you and I,’ and they have done a nice job of making people feel like family,” IN Kansas City wrote a decade later.1 The business e-mail, Unipartnersinc@gmail.com, suggests an operating entity named Uni Partners Inc.; this has not been checked against state records.4 A Post reader in 2022 recalled being a regular “since it opened as a small(er) hole in the wall,” implying an expansion of the original room at some point.2 Nothing about the Lius’ background before 2014 — training, prior restaurants, hometown — has been published.
The restaurant’s reputation has been built by readers’ polls rather than critics: a top-five Post sushi pick in January 2022, Best Japanese in the Post’s Best of Johnson County 2024 (ahead of finalist Jun’s), and a Best Sushi finalist in The Pitch’s 2025 Best of KC.256
