Jun’s Japanese Restaurant is, by IN Kansas City’s reckoning, “may just be the oldest sushi restaurant in Kansas City”: it opened in 1978 “out south,” moved in 1994 to the State Line Center at 7660 State Line Road in Prairie Village, and has run a long sushi counter and tatami-floored private rooms there ever since. Its founder, Jun — a trained sushi chef — retired and trained the current owner to carry on; a generation of local sushi chefs, including Tora Zushi’s Brett DeHart, apprenticed at his bar. Today it is dinner-only, Monday through Saturday, reservations by phone only, with a Monday–Thursday happy hour. It was a Best Japanese finalist in the Johnson County Post’s Best of Johnson County 2024 and a Best Sushi finalist in The Pitch’s Best of KC 2025.
Description
Jun’s occupies a unit in the State Line Center strip on the Kansas side of State Line Road at about 77th Street, on Prairie Village’s eastern edge.12 Inside is the layout IN Kansas City described in its 2024 survey of the metro’s sushi: “a full sushi bar and private rooms with tatami mat floors for larger parties.”3 The Johnson County Post’s readers called it “an upscale, fine-dining experience” and pointed to the lunch sushi-and-sashimi combos, the chicken teriyaki and red snapper dinners, and the hibachi-grill menu — though lunch service, suspended in the pandemic, has not returned: the restaurant’s own hours page lists dinner only, 4 to 9, Monday through Saturday, with a Monday–Thursday happy hour.14
The house style is old-school. IN KC’s advice: “Keep it simple here, start with baked green mussels, then get a variety of nigiri, and treat yourself to a Japanese beer.”3 The restaurant’s published sushi list runs to raw-fish rolls (a rainbow, a cucumber-wrapped dragon of tuna, yellowtail and salmon, a scallop roll, spicy tuna and salmon, an “Ocean” and a “Pacific”), cooked rolls with local names — a Chiefs roll of snow crab in soy paper lightly tempura-fried, a Jayhawk of crab and shrimp in a cucumber sheet, the eponymous Jun roll of eel and avocado over shrimp and asparagus, a Las Vegas, a lobster tempura roll — and a short vegetable list including ume shiso and oshinko maki.5 Omakase is available on request at the counter.6
Ownership and history
The restaurant is named for its founder, Jun, “a trained sushi chef known for his quality selection of fresh fish,” who “would gladly suggest new things to try”; his surname does not appear in any accessible source.3 He opened the restaurant in 1978 at an unidentified location “out south” and moved it in 1994 to the State Line Road center it still occupies; by 2024 IN KC counted 46 years of continuous operation and judged it likely the oldest sushi restaurant in Kansas City.3 “When he retired, he trained the new owner, who continues Jun’s legacy” — the new owner is likewise unnamed.3
Jun’s counter has been a training ground. Brett DeHart, who went on to be executive chef at Nara and to found Fénix and Tora Zushi at Strang Hall, apprenticed at Jun’s in Prairie Village in the early 2000s.7 The restaurant’s site today carries a 2026 copyright as “Jun’s Sushi Restaurant,” a menu split into sushi, dinner, drink and “happy menu” pages, phone-only reservations, and a holiday-hours list.849
