Tacos El Guero 100% Michoacanos is a small, roughly 30-seat taqueria on Minnesota Avenue in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, that cooks in the style of Michoacán — the name says so — and is best known locally for its beef birria with consomé. Description

Tacos El Guero sits in a modest brick building on the 1400 block of Minnesota Avenue, the main commercial street of downtown Kansas City, Kansas. The room seats about thirty around an open kitchen, and the menu is short — tacos and quesadillas, with the meats doing the work.123 Reviewers mirrored from Google count nine taco varieties, with the asada (dressed with the house orange hot sauce), al pastor with grilled onions and beans, and the birria singled out most often; the salsa’s orange sauce is a recurring note across travel-blog write-ups.34

The birria is what put the place on the map. In March 2021 Kansas City Magazine, reporting a citywide taco survey, wrote that “the succulent beef birria ($3) at Tacos el Guero captures this magic. Served in corn tortillas with diced onions, cilantro and a side of irresistible consomé.”5 The Kansas City, Kansas convention and visitors bureau, in a September 2021 roundup of birria in Wyandotte County, called it “a hidden gem” near downtown and noted that “some of the reviews even say they have the best birria tacos in town.”6 The CVB’s own listing summarizes the operation as “delicious authentic Mexican food from this little taqueria. The “100% Michoacanos” in the name is the restaurant’s only public statement of origin: the Instagram bio repeats it, and the owners have not been profiled in the press.8 The CVB’s 2023 Taco Trail primer lists the restaurant at 1410 Minnesota Ave for its cabeza tacos, and its listing is filed under the bureau’s Taco Trail category.97

The restaurant is family-run by every third-party indication — “friendly, welcoming” staff, “family friendly” amenity flags, a tiny room with cheap prices — but the family’s name, its town of origin in Michoacán, and the year the taqueria opened are all undocumented.103
