Tacos El Sobrino is a family-run taqueria at 3139 State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas — a sit-down room a notch above a hole-in-the-wall, with table service and beer, that opens at 10 a.m. seven days a week and runs late. It is a KCK Taco Trail stop whose double-layered al pastor and tripa tacos earned a listener recommendation on KCUR’s 2025 best-tacos roundup, and its listing carried over to the KC2026 World Cup dining directory.

Description

Tacos El Sobrino occupies a storefront on State Avenue near 31st Street, on the east–west artery that runs from downtown Kansas City, Kansas out to the Legends. The Kansas City, Kansas convention and visitors bureau describes it this way: “Tacos El Sobrino takes pride in its traditional recipes, expertly crafted with high-quality ingredients. The sizzling carne asada, perfectly marinated pollo, and tender carnitas are just a few of the highlights that keep diners coming back for more.”1 Kansas Tourism’s listing is plainer — “Local restaurant serving all your favorite Mexican foods, fast and friendly service.”2

Reviewers mirrored from Yelp place it “slightly more upscale than a hole-in-the-wall,” with waitress service and beer, and one calls it a “mom and pop style shop.”3 The tacos come double-tortilla’d. In KCUR’s July 2025 Up To Date roundup of Kansas City’s best tacos, listener Ben Fuentes recommended it for “a hearty portion of meat, and they double-layer the corn tortilla — as any good taco establishment should! I enjoy their tacos al pastor. Their taco de tripa, or intestine, is for you more adventurous types.”4 A 2022 Taco Trail travelogue logged the pastor as “delightful,” with “great sauces and options.”5

The name means “the nephew’s tacos.” Whether it is a nod to Tacos El Tio (“the uncle”), another Taco Trail taqueria on the west edge of downtown KCK, or simply a family nickname, is not documented.
