Tapatio Mexican Grill

Tapatio Mexican Grill is a full-service Mexican restaurant and bar in Prescott Plaza, just off I-70 at the 18th Street exit in Kansas City, Kansas. Its slogan is “El nuevo sabor de México,” and the menu is long and Jalisco-leaning — parrilladas and molcajetes, tortas ahogadas, carne en su jugo, a large cold-seafood list of aguachiles, ceviche towers and oysters, weekend menudo, pozole and caldo de res — with a bar built on cantaritos, micheladas and one of the metro’s bigger tequila lists. Owner Jorge Salazar opened a second Tapatio on NW Barry Road in the Northland in spring 2025; the 18th Street original hosts live music on Friday nights.

Description

Tapatio occupies Suite A of Prescott Plaza, a strip center on South 18th Street immediately south of the I-70 interchange, with its own lot; NetWaiter’s listing describes it as “in a relatively new strip mall just off I-70 at the 18th Street exit, making it very easy to get to.”¹² The restaurant’s own framing is hospitality first — “Our Casa es su Casa!” — with “the best margaritas in town, imported and national beers and the biggest selection of tequilas.”¹ A “tapatío” is a native of Guadalajara, and the menu leans that way: torta ahogada, Guadalajara’s “drowned” sandwich; carne en su jugo; Pollo Jalisco; Fajitas Jalisco; a Cazuela Jalisco and Michelada Jalisco at the bar.³

The food menu runs to more than 200 items. The house specialties are grill platters — a Parrillada Mexicana of pork, steak, chicken and shrimp with cambray onions and nopales ($41.99, half $27.99) and a Molcajete Tapatío served in the stone mortar ($26.99) — plus chile verde, chile colorado, chilaquiles with steak and eggs, and alambres.³ A separate cold-seafood section is unusual for a KCK Mexican restaurant of this type: shrimp and campechano cocktails, red, green and chiltepín aguachiles, ceviches, a cucumber pepinazo, and seafood towers (Torre de Chacorta $35.99; Torre El Señor and La Reyna $48.99), alongside hot camarones a la diabla, mojarra frita and a Molcajete del Mar; party platters (Mariscada Tapatío for four, $101.99; Plato Nayarit for two) are built for sharing.³ Weekends add caldo de res, menudo and pozole; a lunch menu runs egg plates (huevos rancheros, con chorizo, a la mexicana) and $9–13 express items; a “Week Special’s” list drops tacos to $2.50.³ The site’s photo menu highlights the T-bone a la mexicana, carnitas, carne asada a la diabla con camarones and the parrillada.⁴

The bar sells house margaritas in 12-, 20- and 45-ounce pours and by the jar, cantaritos small and large, a Charolazo and Viuda Negra among the micheladas, “Las Toxicas” (a $19.99 special), and a tequila list that runs from Hacienda Vieja at $8.99 a pour to Clase Azul reposado and Don Julio 1942 rosado, with bottle service on Buchanan’s and Don Julio 70.³¹ Sixteen Mexican beers are stocked; buckets (“cubetas”) are $25–40.³ Live music is Friday nights at Tapatio #1.¹

Ownership and history

Jorge Salazar is the owner, identified as such by Dos Mundos, the bilingual Kansas City newspaper, when it covered the second location’s opening in June 2025.⁵ The KCK restaurant’s founding date is not documented in any source found: its Facebook page and photos date to at least the early 2010s, a 2020 review recalls being “introduced to this place a couple years ago,” and NetWaiter carried it as an ordering client from the mid-2010s.⁶²

The expansion to the Northland took time. Salazar told Dos Mundos it “was a great relief to finally open the new place” at 6151 NW Barry Road after waiting about a year for permits, which he attributed to working across two states; the Missouri store opened in late March 2025 and held a grand opening with a mariachi band and ribbon-cutting on May 29, 2025. He said he plans more locations in the metro.⁵ The second store runs its own site and Toast page as “Tapatio Mexican Grill #2,” with hours Sun–Thu 11–10 and Fri–Sat 11–10:30.⁷

The word tapatío also appears as a dish name on unrelated KC menus — “Steak Tapatio” at el-maguey, “Tacos Tapatios” at ixtapa — which is a description of Guadalajara style, not a link to this restaurant.
