Tapatio Mexican Grill #2 is the Northland sequel to Jorge Salazar’s Jalisco-leaning Mexican restaurant in Kansas City, Kansas — a full-service dining room and bar in the Barry Road Shops strip at 6151 NW Barry Road, in the former Hong’s Buffet. It opened quietly in late March 2025 after a year of waiting on permits and held its grand opening, with a mariachi band and a ribbon-cutting, on May 29, 2025. The menu is the KCK original’s: parrilladas and molcajetes, tortas ahogadas, a long cold-seafood list, weekend caldos, and cantaritos and micheladas from the bar.

Description

The restaurant occupies the end unit of the Barry Road Shops, the strip at 6141–6151 NW Barry Road on the north side of the road west of I-29, in the Northland’s Barry Road retail corridor.12 The space had been Hong’s Buffet & Mongolian Grill, a Chinese buffet that Yelp now marks closed and that drew a health-department suspension in 2014 after a small kitchen fire brought inspectors in.34 Tapatio’s build-out turned the buffet floor into a dining room and bar; the store’s own site describes it simply as a “Mexican restaurant” and shows the food rather than the room.2

The menu is a copy of the KCK original’s, which runs past 200 items. From the Barry Road site’s own ordering page: street tacos on soft corn tortillas with onion and cilantro ($4.19), a small cheese dip ($7.34) and a chimichanga “stuffed with choice of meat, then deep fried to a golden brown topped with cheese sauce,” with rice and beans ($17.84).5 The parent menu supplies the rest — the Parrillada Mexicana of pork, steak, chicken and shrimp with cambray onions and nopales, the Molcajete Tapatío in its stone mortar, torta ahogada, carne en su jugo, aguachiles and seafood towers, weekend caldo de res, menudo and pozole, and a bar of house margaritas by the 12-, 20- and 45-ounce pour, cantaritos and a Charolazo.6 Yelp shows 16 reviews as of June 2026; a January 2026 review on the original’s aggregate page refers to the Barry Road room.78

Ownership and history

Jorge Salazar owns both Tapatios. The KCK restaurant in Prescott Plaza predates any documentation found — its founding year is an open question on its own page — and the Northland expansion was, by Salazar’s account to Dos Mundos, a slog: he waited about a year for permits, which he attributed to operating across two states, and said opening was “a great relief.”9 The store opened in late March 2025 and held its grand opening on May 29 with mariachi and a ribbon-cutting; Salazar told the paper he plans more locations around the metro.9 The Barry Road store runs its own domain (© 2024, registered ahead of opening) and its own Toast account, listed as “Tapatio KC 2.”210

The space

Barry Road Shops is a multi-tenant retail strip addressed 6141–6151 NW Barry Rd; the Registry uses the ZIP the restaurant itself publishes (64151) and notes that LoopNet and Yelp file the property under 64154.127 Hong’s Buffet & Mongolian Grill occupied 6151 for years before closing; a 2014 FOX4 report on its suspension is the most detailed record of the predecessor.34 Closing date of Hong’s and any interim tenant:.
