Burek and Cake is a Bosnian bakery in the Northland opened by Fatima Hodzic in November 2022 — a cottage-sized A-frame at 3605 NE Antioch Rd where everything is made from scratch daily. Fatima grew up near Zenica, Bosnia, lost her father in the Bosnian War, and learned to bake alongside her mother. She immigrated to Kansas City ~2019, started selling during lockdown on Facebook, and built a physical bakery from there. 5.0 stars on Google (253+ reviews).
Description
Burek and Cake is a one-woman Bosnian bakery tucked into a small A-frame cottage in KC’s Northland. Owner Fatima Hodzic grew up near Zenica in central Bosnia, where baking was survival — her father was killed during the Bosnian War and she and her mother made food together to get by. She later became an Islamic Theology professor in Bosnia before her husband Senaid found US work and the family relocated to Kansas City around 2019. When COVID hit she started baking from home and posting on Facebook; the response pushed her to open a physical space. Every item is made fresh daily from scratch, using real fruits, real jams, and European-sourced ingredients. The menu spans traditional Bosnian savory phyllo pies (burek), classic sweets (baklava, tulumba, hurmašica), and contemporary cakes — all built on the same philosophy: “I want my customers to learn what burek is. I wanted to bring my tradition.”1
Tier classification
Tier 2 — KC-dedicated immigrant-owned independent. Fatima Hodzic was born and raised in Bosnia, near Zenica — not KC-born/raised.1 She relocated to Kansas City ~2019 and has built Burek and Cake here as her livelihood and cultural mission. The founding story (pandemic-era home baking → physical bakery; Bosnian War survival through bread; grandmother-to-granddaughter baking lineage) gives this a strong community identity at the Tier 2 level. Women-owned (specialty tag added).
