Danny’s Burger Shack is a counter-service burger joint at 8002 N. Oak Trafficway in the Northland that started as a food truck in 2021 and moved into this storefront in August 2022. Everything is made to order and almost nothing is frozen: fresh-ground Black Angus chuck from Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri cattle, hand-breaded chicken, house pickles and sauces, and onion rings breaded each morning and sold until they run out. The two best sellers — the West Coast–style DBS Classic with DBS sauce and sweet pickles, and the mustard-and-pickle Old School — make up about half of sales. Founders Daniel and Niki Kidwell sold the business to Joe Sessel and Mark Denton, who opened a second shack in Shawnee in August 2026.
Description
Danny’s Burger Shack sits in a suite of a strip center at 8002 N. Oak Trafficway, a small red-white-and-blue room with counter seating that the owners describe as having been “successful” but “limiting to how many people we can serve.”12 It is a make-to-order shop with no microwave on the premises — “We don’t just slap a bunch of frozen stuff together,” co-owner Joe Sessel says — and the pitch is freshness: beef ground and patties formed off-site and driven to the restaurant several times a week without ever being frozen, sauces, breading and pickles made in-house, buns from Roma Bakery.345 The founders’ own line was that the only things ever frozen inside a DBS are the fries and tots.5
The burgers are the eight signature builds the site advertises. The DBS Classic — “an homage to the great West Coast burgers”: toasted bun, shredded romaine, DBS sauce, caramelized onion, tomato, sweet pickles, American cheese — comes as a single ($9), double ($12), triple ($15) or pounder ($17); the shop “suggests a double for optimum flavor profile.”6 The Old School is yellow mustard, house pickles and red onion, “an homage to all the little greasy spoons across America.”6 Together those two are roughly half of what the restaurant sells.3 The rest of the list is more elaborate: the Drunken Rancher (house ranch, cheddar, bacon, a house onion ring and whiskey BBQ sauce), the Sweet Heat (jalapeño jam and black-truffle Dijon on brioche), a Caprese Beef on ciabatta with basil aioli, red-pepper pesto and fresh mozzarella, a PB&J burger, a Brooklyn, a patty melt, and a rotating Burger of the Month — a green hatch chile burger was announced for September 2026.63 Chicken is a hand-breaded thigh on the crispy sandwich, plus tenders and “chicken bites.”61 Onion rings are hand-breaded in the DBS mix each day in limited quantity and sold out most afternoons.12 There is a $4 “Doggo Burger” — a quarter-pound patty on half a bun — for dogs.6
Founder Daniel Kidwell, a former union millwright, wanted the place to be approachable to people with working-class roots; the shop still discounts for law enforcement, military and similar customers, a practice Sessel — a former steelworker — says he is carrying on. “It’s an everybody kind of place.”2
Ownership and history
Daniel (“Danny”) and Niki (Nichole) Kidwell conceived the business in early 2020 and, by their own account, bought the first truck for $1,200 in North Bend, Oregon, during the pandemic; their daughter designed the logo, a friend painted the truck, and they built the kitchen themselves before moving home to Kansas City.75 The Pitch caught the new truck outside a Waldo auto-parts store in July 2021, less than a month into operation, with the couple’s son Everett working the window; it was already selling out at breweries and parking lots.7 Seven weeks in, the little truck’s engine blew; the Kidwells found a replacement rig in Dallas, rebuilt it in two months and reopened on November 3, 2021.5 After a winter in the truck and a summer without air-conditioning, they leased the North Oak storefront, which opened August 23, 2022, as “a family owned and operated business in the heart of the Northland.”52
Kidwell later sold the business to Joe Sessel, who runs it with business partner Mark Denton; the date and terms of the sale have not been reported.43 Sessel is a former steelworker who, per the Star, prefers a rural life “miles west of the suburban sprawl” and starts his commute on a dirt road; he is the operating partner quoted in every 2026 story.42 Denton owns the design firm Project 607 (credited as 607 Interiors on the Shawnee renderings) and is a partner in The Brass Monkey, the cocktail lounge at 307 Admiral Blvd. that opened in 2025; he and his wife handle the restaurants’ design.324 In July 2026 the pair took over the former Bar West space in Shawnee and opened Danny’s Burger Shack – Shawnee on August 13, 2026, the brand’s first Kansas location; Sessel has said further metro expansion will follow only after “we turn the tribal knowledge into a robust industrialized process.”234
