Taste of China has fried crab rangoon and wok-tossed General Tso’s in the Lenexa Plaza shopping center on Quivira Road, just south of Trailridge Middle School, since 1995. It is a takeout-first neighborhood Chinese restaurant of the classic American-Chinese kind — combination platters, small-and-large portions, a forty-plate lunch list at $8.50 — with a few “King Chef” specials such as a lobster Dragon & Phoenix. Reviewers say it changed hands at some point and got better for it; the owners, old and new, have never been named in print.
Description
Taste of China’s own site places it precisely: “on Quivira between 77th and 79th St., in the Lenexa Plaza shopping center, just south of Trailridge Middle School.”1 That corner of Quivira Road is where Lenexa’s northern edge meets Shawnee, and the address wears both cities — the restaurant and Yelp say Lenexa, while Tripadvisor and Groupon file it under Shawnee with the same 66216 ZIP.1234 The restaurant uses Lenexa, and so does the Registry.
The site’s pitch is “fine and fresh traditional Chinese cuisine,” and the specialties it names are chow mai fun and moo shu along with “King Chef’s special dishes like the Dragon & Phoenix — lobster meat with Szechuan sauce — and General Tso’s Chicken.”1 Its second site adds the usual claims — “variety in taste and high quality fresh ingredients,” “friendly atmosphere and excellent service.”5 The menu on the ordering site is the full American-Chinese card: fourteen appetizers from vegetable spring rolls ($3.50) to an appetizer sampler ($14.25); wonton, egg-drop and hot-and-sour soups in two sizes; chicken, beef and shrimp sections priced small and large; a chef’s-specialty list (Happy Family, Seafood Combination, Mongolian beef, beef with scallops, Hunan Triple, coconut shrimp); twenty-six combination platters at $10.50–11.25; and a lunch list of more than forty plates at $8.50–9.50, served 11 to 3.6 Desserts run from almond cookies to sesame balls and a slice of cheesecake.5
Restaurantji aggregates 134 reviews at 3.9 stars with reviews as recent as June 2026; Yelp counts 44 as of February 2026.72
Ownership and history
“Since 1995, Taste of China has served Lenexa and the surrounding area,” the official site says, which makes it one of the longer-running Chinese restaurants in northern Johnson County.1 No owner, founder or family is named on either official site, and no press coverage was found.
The one thread on ownership comes from customers. A November 2017 review recorded that “the owner himself prepared our lunch,” and Restaurantji’s summary of later reviews says the restaurant “recently improved under new ownership, which has enhanced the quality, freshness, and portion sizes.”7 When the change happened, and who sold to whom, is not on the record. Whether the second domain, tasteofchinalenexaks.com — which duplicates the first site’s content on a different ordering platform — dates from the new ownership is likewise unknown.5
The restaurant is not related to Pine & Bamboo Garden, the Lenexa Chinese restaurant that markets itself with the phrase “a taste of China,” nor, as far as the record shows, to any other Taste of China in the metro.
