The Comfort Kitchen is a mother-and-daughter lunch counter on the historic Liberty square — 7 N Missouri St — serving what it calls “European-style comfort food”: handmade potato-and-cheese pierogis, a muffuletta and a pastrami Reuben, meatball subs, chicken and dumplings, handmade-noodle pastas, and a weekly-changing board. Owners Kris and Alyssa opened it in January, make everything from scratch, and hang local artists’ work on the walls. Fast-casual, daytime, with a Saturday breakfast on farmers-market mornings.

Description

The Comfort Kitchen occupies a storefront at 7 N Missouri St, on the east side of Liberty’s courthouse square. The Historic Downtown Liberty association lists it as a “Fast-casual Restaurant: European-style comfort food — Thoughtful lunches • Cozy classics • Hearty dishes, made with care,” and notes it opens on Saturdays during the farmers market.1 The restaurant’s own site puts it this way: “Experience the warmth of European comfort food, lovingly prepared by our mother-daughter team. From treasured family recipes passed down through generations to freshly made meals crafted with care.”2

The standing menu is a deli board with a Central-European accent. Handmade pierogis — potato and cheese, boiled then pan-seared with butter, caramelized onions and sour cream — anchor the mains; the sandwich list runs Classic Italian, muffuletta, pastrami Reuben on marble rye, turkey and smoked gouda, roast beef with horseradish aioli, a club, and an Italian sausage hoagie, plus build-your-own sandwiches and grilled cheese.3 Pastas (lemon chicken; chicken scallopini with artichokes and capers) are made on handmade noodles.3 A breakfast menu — biscuits and gravy, a country potato bowl, French toast, omelettes, egg sandwiches — runs on the Saturday openings.32 Desserts (brownies, tarts, a small chocolate pie, cheesecake) and sides (beet salad, pimento cheese, tomato pie, watermelon salad) rotate and are frequently marked out of stock.3

Historic Downtown Liberty’s profile describes a menu the owners change weekly — “from meatball subs to chicken and dumplings” — with everything made from scratch, a build-your-own sandwich station, catering, and walls hung with paintings accepted from community artists.4

Ownership and history

The Comfort Kitchen is owned by Kris and her daughter Alyssa; the association’s profile and the restaurant’s own site both describe a mother-daughter team, but neither publishes a surname.42 Before moving to Liberty, Alyssa was a director at a mid-sized nonprofit and worked at the University of Georgia helping high-school students with post-secondary planning; cooking, the profile says, “has been her passion since childhood.”4

The restaurant “opened up in the square back in January, just in time for the new year.”4 The profile is undated; its images were uploaded in April 2026, and the restaurant’s Instagram and Toast activity are all 2026, so January 2026 is the working opening date — treated as provisional until a dated source confirms the year.45 Alyssa on the reception: “The community is so supportive. I’ve never lived in a place where, even in other restaurants, they just want us to succeed,” and “the square is part of that village.”4

The Compiler’s brief described the family as coming from Pittsburgh with a Hungarian/Polish/Italian kitchen tradition. Nothing found online confirms that; the pierogis, muffuletta and Italian sausage hoagie are consistent with it, but the claim is left unsourced.
