Geography

Greenwood sits in the southeast corner of jackson-county-mo, with a portion of its city limits extending south across the county line into cass-county-mo.1 The city straddles the Missouri Route 150 corridor a few miles east of its interchange with U.S. Route 50 and I-470, placing it between lees-summit to the northwest and lone-jack-mo to the east.1 The 2020 census reported a total area of about 5.23 square miles, essentially all land.1

Population

The 2020 decennial census recorded 6,021 residents, up from 5,221 in 2010 — reflecting the steady southeastward suburbanization of the Lee’s Summit / south-metro fringe.21

History

Founding and name

A post office called Greenwood has operated in the area since 1866, and the town itself was laid out in 1867, in the wave of post–Civil War railroad and farm-town platting that repopulated the border counties after the wartime evacuations.1 The community developed as a small agricultural trading center in the southern Jackson County / northern Cass County corridor before eventually incorporating as a municipality in 1963, during the mid-century wave of suburban formalization around Kansas City.1

Civil War and Order No. 11 context

Southeastern Jackson County — including the Greenwood, lees-summit, and lone-jack-mo area — lay squarely within the district depopulated by Union Brigadier General Thomas Ewing Jr.’s General Order No. 11 of August 25, 1863, which forcibly evacuated most rural residents from Jackson, Cass, and Bates counties (and part of Vernon) in response to Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence.5 The Battle of Lone Jack (August 15–16, 1862) had been fought just a few miles to the east the year before.6 Greenwood as a platted town is therefore a post-order, Reconstruction-era resettlement of a landscape that had been largely emptied — a pattern shared with much of southern Jackson County.5

Schools

Greenwood is served by the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, the same district that covers lees-summit and neighboring unincorporated areas of southeastern Jackson County.3 The district operates Greenwood Elementary School inside the city.7

Government

Greenwood is organized as a Missouri fourth-class city governed by a mayor and a board of aldermen elected from wards; city hall is at 709 W. Main Street.4

Relationship to neighbors

  • lees-summit — Greenwood’s dominant northern neighbor, sharing the LSR7 school district and functioning as its principal employment / retail center.3
  • lone-jack-mo — small city to the east along the MO-150 corridor, sharing the Civil War border-war history.6
  • jackson-county-mo — county of primary jurisdiction; Greenwood is one of its southernmost incorporated places.1
  • cass-county-mo — county that contains the southern sliver of the city limits.1
