Ownership and history
The restaurant takes its name from Edward A. Stine, a Kansas City native, businessman, and lawyer nicknamed “Governor Stumpy” after a running joke — his wife told a band leader he was “the former governor of Tennessee” when he kept requesting a song. The grill was named by Stine’s grandchildren in his memory and opened in 1997, taking over the space of the former Leonard’s restaurant. Kevin Ryan is the owner/operator.123
