Johnnie’s on Seventh is a dive bar at 55 S 7th St in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas. It opened in 1934 and is named for its founder, Johnnie Baska. Since 2010 it has been run by Chris O’Connor, who is the brother of a woman married to Johnnie Baska’s grandson — an ownership change that kept the bar inside the founding family’s orbit. Kansas City Magazine calls Strawberry Hill’s dive-bar cluster among the best in America and treats Johnnie’s as one of its anchors. Tier 1 — single-location, owner-run, Wyandotte County, 90+ years in one building. Operating status is not first-party confirmed — see Current standing.123
Description
Johnnie’s on Seventh occupies a standalone red brick building on 7th Street Trafficway at the southern edge of Strawberry Hill, the Croatian- and Slovenian-founded bluff neighborhood immediately north of downtown Kansas City, Kansas. The building is two storeys, but the bar’s pitched interior roof reads as though it is not — a detail Scoundrel’s Field Guide singles out as an optical illusion peculiar to the place.2
The room is shotgun-style: two rooms deep, with black-and-white checkerboard tile across the main bar floor and permanent stools along the bar. Scoundrel’s Field Guide suggests some of the stools may be 1934 originals, which is offered as an observation rather than a documented fact and is recorded here as such.2 The ceiling carries framed black-and-white photographs of famous men, all of whom are named John — a running joke Kansas City Magazine records as the bar’s signature decor.1
Free games are a stated draw: pool, shuffleboard, two metal-tip dart boards, foosball, bumper-shuffleboard and beer pong.2 The bar runs seven taps and carries Irish whiskey.12
Johnnie’s sits inside a dense cluster of Strawberry Hill and near-KCK dive bars that Kansas City Magazine inventoried in 2021 — Sammy’s Tavern (222 N 6th), Fat Matt’s Vortex (411 N 6th), Breit’s Stein and Deli (412 N 5th), Chicago’s (534 Central), the 403 Club (614 Reynolds), The Easy Inn (322 N 6th), the Coach Lite Club in Argentine (2103 S 34th), and the since-closed the-mockingbird-lounge (204 Orchard, now the-blue-palm).1 Several of these are already in the Registry — sammys-tavern, fat-matts-vortex, breits-stein-and-deli, the-easy-inn — which places Johnnie’s in an already-documented cluster rather than in isolation.
Ownership and history
Founded 1934 by Johnnie Baska, whose first name the bar still carries.12 Both independent sources agree on the year and the founder, so the founding date is not in dispute.
The bar sold in 2010 to Chris O’Connor. Kansas City Magazine describes O’Connor’s connection precisely: he is the brother of a woman who married Johnnie Baska’s grandson.1 Scoundrel’s Field Guide records the same 2010 sale without naming the buyer, characterising it as a transfer to “someone with a connection to the original founder” and a good sign for the bar’s long-term preservation.2 The two accounts corroborate rather than conflict.
**** The 2010 ownership fact rests on a 2021 article and has not been re-confirmed since.
Independence: no chain, franchise, out-of-metro parent or investor group identified. Single location.
Menu
Confirmed absence of a recoverable first-party menu (checked 2026-08-13). menu_status: unverified · no priced items captured.
Surfaces checked and their outcome:
- Independent domain — none located.
johnnieskc.comexists but belongs to Johnnie’s Jazz Bar & Grille in Liberty, Missouri, an unrelated business; see Disputes. - Facebook page — exists but was not retrievable in this session.4
- Kansas Tourism listing — carries no menu or pricing.3
- Do816 venue page — HTTP 403 on fetch.
- Aggregators (Yelp, TripAdvisor, Foursquare, Untappd, Restaurantji) — carry price impressions for this address and are excluded from this Registry under the first-party-only pricing rule.
Two unpriced product facts are recorded from named sources, and are deliberately not presented as a menu: the bar runs seven taps,2 and stocks Irish whiskey.1 No drink price for Johnnie’s appears in either source. (Kansas City Magazine prices items at other bars in the same article — three-dollar “Grog” shots at Fat Matt’s Vortex, a $4 Guinness and a $5.45 Reuben at Breit’s — but gives no Johnnie’s price. Do not transfer those.)
This is a social-only neighborhood bar with no web presence of its own. The absence of a first-party menu is the expected outcome, not a research failure.
Disputes
- Name form. “Johnnie’s on Seventh” is the form used by Kansas City Magazine, Kansas Tourism and the business’s own Facebook page. Yelp lists the same address as “Johnnie’s Sports Bar”, and Yellow Pages carries a “Johnnie’s Club” at a 66101 address. Recorded as aliases. Whether the bar has ever formally traded as “Sports Bar” or “Club” is **** — no signage photograph was verified.
- Spelling. The intake note for this page rendered the name “Jhonnie’s”. No source supports that spelling; every source located spells it Johnnie’s, consistent with founder Johnnie Baska. The page and slug use Johnnie’s. Flagged so the intake spelling is not reintroduced.
- Address format. Sources give both “55 S 7th St” and “55 S 7 Trfwy” (7th Street Trafficway). Same location; the street carries both names.
- 1934 bar stools. Scoundrel’s Field Guide speculates the permanent stools “may be” originals.2 Not treated as fact.
