This Kansas City business has closed. KS.City keeps its page on the record.
The Mockingbird Lounge was a cocktail bar and all-day-brunch room at 204 Orchard St in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas. It opened in spring 2017 and closed unexpectedly in September 2023, after roughly six and a half years, when the property was seized for unpaid taxes. It was known for its rustic patio and its skyline view over the West Bottoms, and for a bar program heavy on mezcal, Japanese whisky and Pisco sours. The space is not vacant — the-blue-palm, a tiki bar, opened in it in September 2024 and is the current occupant of the address.

Description
The Mockingbird Lounge occupied the ground floor of a corner building on Orchard Street on the Strawberry Hill bluff, where the land drops away toward the West Bottoms. The view was the draw: a rustic patio with a full city skyline, unusual for a KCK neighborhood bar and repeatedly the thing reviewers led with.
The bar sat at the modern end of the Strawberry Hill drinking spectrum. When Kansas City Magazine inventoried the neighborhood’s dive bars, it placed the Mockingbird among them but distinguished its offer sharply from the rest of the block — “trendy mezcals, Japanese whisky, Pisco sours” against the three-dollar shots and $4 Guinness of its neighbors.2 Its other signature was all-day brunch; the tamales and the Bloody Mary are the items that recur most in the surviving review record, though that record is aggregator content and is not cited here as a menu.
Its neighbors in that same inventory — several of them already in the Registry — were johnnies-on-seventh (55 S 7th), sammys-tavern (222 N 6th), fat-matts-vortex (411 N 6th), breits-stein-and-deli (412 N 5th) and the-easy-inn (322 N 6th).2
Ownership and history
Opened spring 2017. The opening was covered by Feast Magazine in an article whose URL identifier dates it to 2017 and whose headline announces the lounge “opens in Strawberry Hill, serving cocktails and all-day brunch.”4 The article body could not be retrieved in this session (HTTP 429 on repeated attempts; no Wayback capture exists), so its contents — including any owner name, exact opening date and building history — are not available to this page and are not reproduced from search summaries.
Owner:. No published source that could be opened names the owner or ownership group. The closure statement widely quoted as “It’s been a hell of a run but after six and a half years, The Bird is closing its doors” is attributed to the owner’s Facebook post; Facebook was not retrievable in this session, so the quote is not treated as verified here.
Building history — unverified lead, do not publish. A claim circulates that 204 Orchard is a 1930 two-storey brick building that housed a grocery store, reopened as The Riverview Club in 1980, and operated from 1983 to 2014 as The View, said to be Kansas City’s longest-standing gay club. If true this is significant local LGBTQ+ history and materially raises the building’s importance. It is recorded here only as a research lead. It surfaced in a search-result summary, not in any source this session could open, and search summaries are not a source under this Registry’s rules. **** — the Wyandotte County Register of Deeds, the Kansas Historical Society, and the Feast article itself are the obvious checks. Notably, the-blue-palm — the current tenant — is described in coverage as an explicitly LGBTQ+-friendly and transgender-safe space, which would make the building’s continuity worth establishing properly rather than assuming.
Closed September 2023. Kansas City Magazine, reporting on 2023-11-01 about the incoming tiki bar, states plainly that the Mockingbird Lounge “closed unexpectedly in September 2023.”1 The Pitch, on 2023-11-21, confirms The Blue Palm was “taking over the former Mockingbird Lounge space at 204 Orchard Street.”3 These are the closure verification for this page.
Reason. Reporting indicates a sign on the door stated the property had been “seized for nonpayment of taxes and is now in the possession of the State of Kansas,” with unpaid taxes of $40,519.91, and that the closure coincided with that of the Drunken Worm elsewhere in the metro on the same day.5 The Fox4 article returned HTTP 403 and could not be opened; the figure and the quoted sign text therefore carry a “ and should not be repeated downstream until the article is read. The fact of a September 2023 closure does not depend on this — that rests on the Kansas City Magazine report.
Independence: no chain, franchise or out-of-metro parent identified at any point.
Menu
Confirmed absence of a recoverable first-party menu (checked 2026-08-13). menu_status: unverified · no priced items captured.
Surfaces checked and their outcome:
- Independent domain — none located. The business appears never to have had one.
- Facebook page — exists but was not retrievable in this session.
- Feast Magazine opening article — HTTP 429 on repeated attempts; no Wayback capture exists (checked via the Internet Archive availability API, which returned an empty
archived_snapshotsobject). - Aggregators (Zmenu, Restaurantji, Wheree, RestaurantGuru, TripAdvisor, Yelp) — all carry “menus” for this business, several with “updated 2026” datelines on a business closed since 2023. All excluded under the first-party-only pricing rule, and their datelines are a worked example of why the rule exists.
Two unpriced product facts are recorded from a named, opened source and are deliberately not presented as a menu: the bar’s drinks list ran to mezcal, Japanese whisky and Pisco sours,2 and the format included all-day brunch. No Mockingbird price appears in any source this session could open.
For a closed business with no archived first-party surface, recovering a real menu is unlikely. Do not grind on it.
Disputes
- Opening date. “Spring 2017” is inferred from two consistent signals: the Feast opening article’s 2017 URL identifier,4 and the widely reported “six and a half years” span ending in September 2023, which back-calculates to spring 2017. No source opened in this session states an opening month or day. Recorded as provisional; do not harden it to a specific date.
- Closure reason. September 2023 closure is verified.1 The tax-seizure explanation and the $40,519.91 figure come from an article that could not be opened.5 ****
- Building history. The 1930 grocery → Riverview Club (1980) → The View (1983–2014) chain is an unverified lead and is not asserted by this page. See Ownership and history.
- Owner’s closure quote. The “hell of a run” Facebook statement is unverified; Facebook was not retrievable.

Tyler Shane, “A Tiki Bar Will Open In The Former Mocking Bird Lounge,” Kansas City Magazine, 2023-11-01 (accessed 2026-08-13) — asserts: the Mockingbird Lounge closed unexpectedly in September 2023; the space is at 204 Orchard St., Kansas City, Kansas; The Blue Palm will take it over, owned by Dan Doty, Roxie Danner and Houston Defoe, then planning an early-December 2023 opening; the new owners intend to black out the former lounge’s large front windows and redesign the patio entrance. This is the closure verification for this page. Does not name the Mockingbird’s owner, give its opening date, state a closure reason, or describe its menu. ↩ ↩2 ↩3

“Strawberry Hill might just have the best collection of dive bars in America,” Kansas City Magazine (accessed 2026-08-13) — asserts: Mockingbird Lounge at 204 Orchard St. serving “trendy mezcals, Japanese whisky, Pisco sours,” listed alongside the Strawberry Hill dive-bar cluster named in the Description. Does not give prices for the Mockingbird (it prices items at other bars in the article — do not transfer them), nor owner, opening or closure facts. Article was still describing the bar as operating, placing it before September 2023. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4
