J’s Fish & Chicken in Independence is the eastern outpost of the Prospect Avenue fish-and-chicken chain — a small takeout counter on West 23rd Street South that fries whiting, catfish, tilapia, cod and perch to order and sells them, with wings, tenders, shrimp and gizzards, in combos that come with fries, bread and a drink. Reviewers call the room small and the parking tight; the store’s own DoorDash code marks it as the chain’s fourth unit. With the Kansas City, Kansas store closed since a January 2026 fire, it is one of three J’s still taking orders.

Description

The store sits on West 23rd Street South in Independence, in the commercial run west of Noland Road, and it is the only J’s outside Kansas City proper.12 The chain’s brochure site prints the address as 1332 W 23rd St; Yelp, Restaurantji and the store’s DoorDash storefront all carry 1330 W 23rd St S, which is presumably the same door — the discrepancy is noted, not resolved.134 Reviewers describe a small space with limited parking “but the food quality is worth the inconvenience.”3

The board is the chain’s. Fish comes as whiting, catfish, tilapia, cod or perch, fried to order; chicken as whole wings, leg-thigh pieces, breasts and tenders; plus large and jumbo shrimp, catfish nuggets and chicken gizzards, the last two also sold by the full pound.5 Combos “include fries, bread, and drink,” and most of the menu is mix-and-match — four wings with two pieces of catfish, eight shrimp with two whiting — in the $13–15 range.5 Sides run to mac and cheese, onion rings, fried mushrooms, jalapeño cheese bombers, green beans, potato salad, fried pickle fries, fried okra, coleslaw and lemon-pepper fries.1 Independence reviewers single out the catfish nuggets, onion rings and “super delicious fried catfish,” and an eight-piece leg-and-thigh deal at $5.99 that the current site menu no longer lists.3

Restaurantji aggregates 195 reviews at 3.8 stars under the “J’s Fish & Chicken Market” name, though its most recent are from January 2022; Yelp’s separate “J’s Fish & Chicken Independence” listing was updated July 2026.36 The store number in its DoorDash storefront URL (“JsFishandChickenMarket04”) suggests it was the chain’s fourth and newest unit.4

Ownership and history

No source found names the owner, the “J” of the name, or the year the Independence store opened; Restaurantji reviewers were calling it “the new location” in and before early 2022, which puts the opening no later than that.3 The chain operates two official domains — jsfishnchicken.com (© 2026), a brochure site with the menu and all four addresses, and jsfishandchickenmarket.com, the Menufy ordering site with a per-store subdomain for Independence — and this store has its own Facebook page.127 See js-fish-and-chicken for the chain’s history as far as it can be reconstructed, including the only press link to a named person: Hamza Khan, who worked “at J’s Fish and Chicken on Prospect” before opening KC Fry Bros in October 2025.8

The Kansas City, Kansas fire

On January 18, 2026 a local Facebook news page reported that “J’s Chicken at 3012 N 27th St … has burned down”; commenters who said they had called the fire department corrected it to a kitchen fire in a closed, empty building.9 Since then the KCK store’s DoorDash storefront has been marked temporarily unavailable and the Menufy locations page lists only the three Missouri units — this one, 28th & Prospect and 54th & Prospect — while the brochure site still prints the KCK address.1021 The Registry treats the KCK unit as closed pending a first-party statement.
