J’s Fish & Chicken at 54th & Prospect is the second Prospect Avenue store of the East Side fish-and-chicken chain whose “main” unit sits twenty-six blocks north at 28th & Prospect. It is the same takeout formula — whiting, catfish, tilapia, cod and perch fried to order, whole wings, tenders, shrimp, gizzards and catfish nuggets, boxed with fries, bread and a drink — run from a counter at 5412 Prospect that stays open until 10 p.m. six nights a week. After a January fire closed the chain’s Kansas City, Kansas store, this is one of three units still taking orders.

Description

The store is a small storefront on the east side of Prospect Avenue just north of 55th Street, in the commercial strip that runs south from Swope Parkway toward Meyer Boulevard. Tripadvisor files the address under “Ivanhoe”; the city’s own neighborhood boundaries place 54th & Prospect well south of that neighborhood.1 The chain’s brochure site names it “54th & Prospect” and lists it second, after the 28th & Prospect “main” store.2

The board is identical across the chain. Fish comes as whiting, catfish, tilapia, cod or perch, fried to order; chicken as whole wings, leg-thigh pieces, breasts and tenders; plus large and jumbo shrimp, catfish nuggets and chicken gizzards, the last two also sold by the full pound.3 Combos “include fries, bread, and drink,” and most of the menu is built as mix-and-match — four wings with two pieces of catfish, eight shrimp with two whiting, shrimp with tenders — in the $13–15 range.3 Sides run to mac and cheese, onion rings, fried mushrooms, jalapeño cheese bombers, green beans, potato salad, fried pickle fries, fried okra, coleslaw and lemon-pepper fries; the site’s one culinary claim is that everything is “made fresh to order with our secret blend of seasonings.”2

Restaurantji aggregates 258 reviews at 3.3 stars for this unit, with reviews continuing through August 2026; one praises the chain as “simply the best fried chicken in KC” and its catering, and another — written after the Kansas City, Kansas store “burned down a few months ago” — calls this Prospect store an improvement on it.4 Yelp carries the store under the “J’s Fish & Chicken Market” name with 43 reviews as of July 2026.5 The store number in its DoorDash storefront URL (“JsFishChickenMarket03”) suggests it was the chain’s third unit.6

Ownership and history

No source found names the owner, the “J” of the name, or the year this store opened; the Tripadvisor listing’s identifier places its creation around 2017–18, a floor rather than an opening date.1 The chain operates two official domains — jsfishnchicken.com (© 2026), a brochure site with the menu and all four addresses, and jsfishandchickenmarket.com, the Menufy ordering site with per-store subdomains — plus a Toast ordering page specific to this store.278 See js-fish-and-chicken for the chain’s history as far as it can be reconstructed, including the only press link to a named person: Hamza Khan, who worked “at J’s Fish and Chicken on Prospect” before opening KC Fry Bros in October 2025.9 Which of the two Prospect stores that was is not stated.

The Kansas City, Kansas fire

On January 18, 2026 a local Facebook news page reported that “J’s Chicken at 3012 N 27th St … has burned down”; commenters who said they had called the fire department corrected it to a kitchen fire in a closed, empty building.10 Since then the KCK store’s DoorDash storefront has been marked temporarily unavailable, the Menufy locations page lists only the three Missouri units, and a reviewer of this store described the KCK unit as having “burned down a few months ago” — while the brochure site still prints the KCK address.11742 The Registry treats the KCK unit as closed pending a first-party statement.
