J’s Fish & Chicken at 28th & Prospect is the “main” store of a four-unit East Side fish-and-chicken chain: a takeout counter selling whiting, catfish, tilapia, cod and perch fried to order, whole wings and tenders, shrimp, gizzards and catfish nuggets, all “with our signature blend of seasonings” and boxed with fries, bread and a drink for under fifteen dollars. It is open until 10 most nights and later on weekends, and it is where Hamza Khan learned the trade before opening KC Fry Bros near Rockhurst in 2025. The chain’s owner has never been named in print.

Description

The store stands on the east side of Prospect Avenue just south of 28th Street, in the Wendell Phillips neighborhood — the stretch of Prospect between Linwood and 31st that has long been an East Side commercial spine.¹ The official site calls this unit “28th & Prospect (Main)” and lists it first; the other three are at 54th & Prospect, on West 23rd Street in Independence, and on North 27th Street in Kansas City, Kansas.²³ It is a counter operation: order at the window, wait while it fries, take it home.

The board is the fish-and-chicken-market format. Fish comes as whiting, catfish, tilapia, cod or perch, fried to order; chicken as whole wings, leg-thigh pieces, breasts and tenders; plus large and jumbo shrimp, catfish nuggets and chicken gizzards, the last two sold by the full pound.⁴ Combos “include fries, bread, and drink,” and most of the menu is built as mix-and-match — four wings with two pieces of catfish, eight shrimp with two whiting, shrimp with tenders — in the $13–15 range.⁴ Sides run to mac and cheese, onion rings, fried mushrooms, jalapeño cheese bombers, green beans, potato salad, fried pickle fries, fried okra, coleslaw and lemon-pepper fries; the site’s one culinary claim is that everything is “made fresh to order with our signature blend of seasonings.”² Restaurantji aggregates 287 reviews at 3.8 stars, with recent ones praising large fried-chicken orders “cooked to perfection.”⁵

Ownership and history

No source found names the owner, the “J” of the name, or the founding year. The business operates two official domains — jsfishnchicken.com (© 2026), a brochure site with the menu and all four locations, and jsfishandchickenmarket.com, the Menufy ordering site with per-store subdomains — and Facebook pages titled “J’s Fish & Chicken Market” for the Missouri and Kansas stores.²³⁶ Yelp has carried the 28th & Prospect store since at least the 2010s and shows 50 reviews as of May 2026.⁷

The one press mention found is indirect. When Hamza Khan, a Pakistani immigrant, opened KC Fry Bros at 55th Street near Rockhurst in October 2025, The Kansas City Star reported that he had previously worked at J’s Fish and Chicken on Prospect — the Registry’s only documented link between J’s and a named person.⁸

The Kansas City, Kansas store at 3012 N 27th Street needs checking: a local Facebook news page posted that “J’s Chicken at 3012 N 27th St … has burned down,” and its DoorDash storefront listing was marked temporarily unavailable at retrieval, while the official site still lists it and Yelp’s listing was updated May 2026.⁹¹⁰²¹¹ Date and extent of the fire:.
